I do love my FPS games, but I'm not entirely sure about Illuminascii. It mixes traditional graphics with ASCII for a really cool effect, but the gameplay isn't all that great.

About the game (Official)
Huge letters loom in the darkness of the RNG. The sinister organisation of the ILLUMINASCII conspire to bring forth a New World Order throughout all the ascii land. As the lowly @ symbol, can you defeat their agents and overturn the conspiracy?

Illuminascii is a new first person shooter with an ascii text based visual style that features randomly generated content and roguelike / rpg elements. Monsters, weapons, armor, levels and cutscenes are all created with random characteristics.

The aesthetics of a roguelike, in a modern engine.

Thoughts
It's a very cool idea, but it's really not executed very well. Everything feels so basic, it becomes boring too quickly.

There is no strategy in the shooting mechanics, as they are as simple as it could be. Same with the enemies, which are just simple floating letters. I get it, ASCII, but it makes it too simplistic to be fun. There is practically no AI in the enemies either, so it doesn't even make for a challenging game.

There's really no depth to game, as everything feels the same no matter where you are. There's little variation in anything it does.

It's a shame, I really liked the idea of the game. I had real trouble thinking of anything interesting to say, as it's funny how such a great idea could be so bland.

The problem I have with the game is that it doesn't go far enough with the ASCII stick.

It should have been more like this than like this.

If they had implemented a aalib (see bb) backend, it would had been better. No X required, only tty.

I'm always on the lookout for more FPS games on Linux but I don't think this one's for me.
