Descent: Underground has released into Early Access on Steam, and I took the punt and a look for you.
It's a bit confusing, as the launcher gives you two different options. The one to login online doesn't work, and the first one in the list tells you it has an "auth error" when it loads up, but it still allowed me to hit Quick Match and play online, and I was also able to play a bot match.
Right now in all honesty I would hold off for quite a few months, there's barely anything to it other than jumping into quick matches online, or playing against AI bots. There's very little content, it's extremely unpolished and just not a great experience right now. Unless you're a super mega fan of Descent I wouldn't bother right now, it needs a long time in the oven.
About the game
A true first person shooter deserves all six degrees of freedom. Fight through twisting tunnels & vast caverns where the concepts of up and down mean nothing and danger lurks around every corner. This is Descent: Underground!
We’re blasting the full-freedom shooter Descent into the 21st Century with next-generation gaming technology built on Unreal Engine 4!
Descent: Underground is a both a prequel to the Descent series and a modernization of the original game play. We’re staying true to the original flight mechanics, arcade style combat, and tightly twisting map design while taking it to the next level!

I loved this series back in the late 90s. Can't wait for full release to enjoy it again!

I never backed it as the video felt like it was comprised of "management" and lacking the technical & artistic passion I would expect for a group wishing to carry on such an amazing legacy.
Now that's the in EA thought, I gotta say it looks like it may "turn heads" - if they develop 4 player co-op and full stream controller support and it looks fun then that'll sell me.
I'm collecting a game aerosol for 4 player Steam Machine LANing, this would make a nice feather in my cap.

The auth errors I had when testing earlier (I backed this on Kickstarter with beta access) seemed intermittent and I was able to get past them eventually. I have had some input issues, but I think that that's my system rather than the game, and the other Linux users I know who've played haven't experienced that.
To me, it feels like a surprisingly solid deathmatch experience given how recently the crowdfunding campaign ended. While the game doesn't directly re-create the feeling of Descent 1, 2 or 3, it does carry some of the same charm. The maps that I played were really nicely made, with a good balance of corridors and open spaces.
With access to the game going from prototype backers to alpha backers to beta backers and early access within two weeks, it feels like the developers are keen to build a critical mass of players that can become a sustainable playing community throughout early access.

Omg this rocks. I was a backer. Have to check my Kickstarter profile! That is for the heads up! I am a huge fan of the old games.
I did the 30$ beta access level but I have no idea how to get my Steam key.

Check their website. They repeatedly hit my e-mail address a bit after the Kickstarter closed asking me to create an account on their website to claim my package, so that might be what you need to do.
Also, while I feel the game isn't quite full-on Descent yet, it's getting there, and it seems to be moving reasonably quickly.

So how do people like the game? I heard that it's mainly a multiplayer game? Is there no singleplayer story like the older games?
