People say we don't cover enough open source, well here's a good one for you. Endless Sky is something I've only recently discovered, and I sort of fell in love with it.

It's not often I fall in love with random games, but Endless Sky has a certain charm to it. Not just because it's free and open source, but it's actually quite well made too.

When you first get into it, it seems like it will be some sort of text-based adventure, but I was really happy to find out it actually has 2D space travel, including a big map, hyperspace travel and so much more to it. I'm genuinely impressed with the level of content in this game already. It even has story content you can follow, and an NPC to show you the ropes at the start, great stuff.

The developer claims the first story you can do already gives 8-16 hours of play, so that's very impressive. It's one open source game I plan to put some real time into, and I'm interested to see where this story goes after trying it out.

The main thing the game needs is some good music and sound effects, which I hope will come in time.

You can find Endless Sky here. The game has also been greenlit to be on Steam, so that's nice too it might find more developers too. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Nice game, I've taken the liberty to make a portable version of the game for who doesn't use Debian/Ubuntu or simply doesn't want to install the packages.

Installation is simple: Extract and run "start32" or "start64" depending on your distro.

Looks great, but there are no Wily packages :'( .

However, the portable version works like a champ, and thanks, Avehicle7887!

I made a portable version of it because I could only find Ubuntu (non Wily) and Debian packages. Should also help other non *buntu user.

EDIT: Just spent the past hour playing this game, damn it's addictive ;)

And, as I said, it works very well, and it's a great little game too. Big thanx to Liam for noticing it!

Reminds me of NAEV. I'll have to check it out. Might be interesting to compare the state of the two projects.

Free and opensource and going to steam! Yeah!

They seemed to be asking for beta testers last month according to the greenlight page.

Theres always room for more. If I may give an idea there's a RTS called Wyrmsun and that is based on Stratagus (think Warcraft II) that has been getting quite a few updates lately :)

Modern android phones and tables are more than capable of running such a game. (Dual /Quad core 1-2 GHz 2-3 GB RAM)

So my question is, is it possible for this game to be ported to Android? and if not then cannot be run under java, dosbox or similar emulator?

Currently on the Google Play Store, developer 'Pelya' -https://play.google.com/store/apps/dev?id=8387589286898375037

They have ported a number of open source software, Open Areana, OpenTTD and rather impressive implementation of Gimp & Incscape.

Would it be possible to run your portable version under their Debian Linux under Android?
