GOL Game Jam Has Entered Rating Phase

By -
Submission phase for the first ever GOL Game Jam has ended and now begins the rating phase. You can now head on over to the jam page and check out all the entries and rate them based on a couple of simple metrics.

You can find the jam page here: http://itch.io/jam/gol-game-jam

In total we got 12 entries. There is actually quite a variety of different styles of games at show that use various different engines. So now all that is left to do is to get them into some kind of an order before we can declare one of the developers (or teams) a winner.

For the ratings I chose a couple of very generic metrics that are typically used to rate games they are Graphics, Sound, Gameplay and Performance/Stability. However, keep in mind that the games were developed in a week while you rate them. I hope it doesn't come as a surprise to anyone that you can't create games that rival the likes of Shadow of Mordor, Metro: Last Light etc. in a week's time.

Finally, thanks to all the participants and good luck on the ratings! Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I didn't yet take a look at the games, but I wonder if categories like "Sound" will match well.
How about some "Creativity" or so?
"Fun"?

To me creativity and fun fall under the gameplay category. But we could change these up a bit in the next game jam so feedback is appreciated.

Tux Bomb is a blatant copy of BombJack.

And the FPS game is not a blatant copy of.. hmmm.. every FPS ever made?

I wanted to try Godot Miami last night, but couldn't get it to run. It couldn't find libXcursor.so.1. I made a symlink from steam to /usr/lib32, but that did nothing. I tried LD_PRELOAD, but that just made the terminal crash. I'll have to try again tonight.
I was going to try Tux Bomb, but then I saw that I'd have to install mono, so I haven't done that yet.
Played Reticle, that one worked out of the box. Simple game, but good target practice.

I tested Godot Miami on Ubuntu 14.04. It worked "out of the box" like Godot Engine.

Remake of bomb jack for linux game jam from gamingonlinux.com 2015
Submitted by Bubexel with 9 minutes, 49 seconds before the deadline

If you check the first video where i decide what kind of game to do, i talk openly about i will remake the game of bomb jack. One of the first arcades i played in my life.

Exactly minute i say i will make a Bomb Jack remake while i'm showing a video on youtube about bomb jack

Btw, is not "blatant" its a "Tribute". Same way is Tux Kart a tribute to Mario Kart, i can say millions of examples.

We had only 1 week to develop a game, maybe you think i will make a full complete game design creating a new gaming genere out of take ideas from existing games.

Or maybe you think i took a bomb jack as template and i just changed the sprites? if it's what you think, you are totally wrong, there you have 13 hours of video showing how i build that from scratch.

The game is designed by me from scratch, all created from zero. I didn't used a full game and just changed the sprites -.-'.

I'm really bored, first people say my game is not linux native, when others made game with Unity that is Mono C# the same runtime i'm using for my game. Now you say i used a full game as template. Well i'm start to begin bored of that shit. I'm really bussy on real, ihave to much work. I dedicated many hours to develop this game for that Game Jam. I didn't used any stupid Engine. I did all physics and everything by myself. Not using a stupid engine and getting stupid assets. I'm retired from that game jam. Don't vote for me.. because i'm out. I won't participate never on it again. bye

PD: Solar, what is the game you made?

then it shouldn't be entered into GOL Game Jam.
rule number 5

What's with the shit stirring? If you don't like a game on there, don't vote for it.

Perhaps the wording was not ideal, but I read rule 5 as essentially you can't just go and tweak an existing MIT / GPL licensed game.

I don't think clones (built from scratch) were contradictory to the rules.

Games inspired by other games are fine, as long as it's created from scratch which it was. To settle that once and for all.

No need to put down others hard work, it's a Game Jam, it's a bit of fun.

Godot engine (64bit) works out of the box, but Godot Miami is 32-bit, so I needed libxcursor1:i386 and libssl1.0.0:i386, that finally got it to run.
In my 3rd attempt I actually managed to smash 2 or 3 guys before they got me. :)

first people say my game is not linux native, when others made game with Unity that is Mono C# the same runtime i'm using for my game.

If this is referring to my comment about having to install mono, I just said that I'd have to install mono, didn't mean anything by it, definitely wasn't meant as an attack against you or the game.

Is not about your comment. It's a comment that other participant wrote on my submit on itch.io just 10 minutes after the countdown. Because my zip file contains .dll files and executable is .exe to keep compatiblity with windows, mac and linux.

Hey, I'm really sorry for making that mistake. I was confused, and I thought you didn't get that upset about it, but really, I am sorry about saying your game is not native. Anyway, your game is really good :), and you shouldn't quit.

Your game was one of the first games I wanted to play because it looked interesting, and I was confused because I saw an exe and dll files. It is totally my mistake. You should not get upset about me being an idiot.

Mate, don't be discouraged! Keep your game in, let others give it a shot. We only had one week to develop, anyone who's expecting a genius new idea or a full experience game doesn't have their expectations set correctly.

That said, for those who tried my game Survive The Unknown, got any feedback for me? I'm curious to know where I did things badly and where I did things in an ok manner. How would I improve gameplay in such a game :)

I definitely feel I overshot my plans, I should have tried to keep things simpler and on a smaller scale. Would have given me more time to test gameplay and bugs.

Well, it was a good concept, and I think given time, you can make a really good game building off of what you got. The only issues I found with your game were bugs and graphics, but they are completely understandable for the time frame we had.
HadBabits 27 Oct 2015
Well done, all. As said in my entry, mine was woefully incomplete, but I do intend on getting a couple of complete games under my belt before the next jam :)

For those interested in Unity and more narrative based games, I definitely recommend checking out Fungus; it's a free toolset for Unity that can be found on the asset store. It's got some really good utilities such as flow charts, dialogue systems, camera and sprite animation, and such that requires little programming knowledge :D

Will do. Thanks for the tip.

I did originally think a rewrite of an existing game was against the rules, as I had intended to enter (which was unrealistic in the end) with a Unity version of Stratego until I read rule #5.

I hope to get my ratings (along with the occasional feedback) in tomorrow, and an entry in the next Jam.

Thank you for the feedback! Initially I had more of a story-based idea where you venture through the island, interacting with nearly everything and getting back dialogue. Occasionally a pirate/navy attack event coming from the sea (which is why I had the AK in place, it wasn't meant to be the main thing). In the end having a melee chasing enemy was easiest to implement though.

Sweet, I didn't know about this. I just wanted to say, I'm impressed with your platformer. I've personally tried Gdevelop and I was surprised to see you be able to do so much within a week with it. Good job :)

I'm downloading all the other titles now. I want to give each one a test run, looking forward to Dark Dungeon and Violent Settlers the most right now.
