GOL Survey Results: October

By -
It’s time to get your monthly fix of stats now that the results for the October (and September) survey are available for you to take a look at and compare with results from previous months.

Firstly, apologies for the late upload of the results, I’ve been a bit busy in real life (it has some pretty good graphics) and also haven’t been able to make a couple of updates and changes to the survey. This month I’m going to just upload the graphs without the commentary to get the results out there.

Some changes

There’s been one big fundamental change this month to the way the survey is presented, and that is that the link to the current survey which normally appears here is gone. From now on, the surveys will be closed for responses two weeks after they open and published that same month, rather than a month and a half later as they have been up until now.

This was basically a leftover of when the survey was split into two articles (one for the new survey and one for the results), but with the split, it makes little sense to continue publishing results a month later so that’s ended now. So this month only, there’s two months for the price of one as both the September and October results are shown.

Coming soon are tables to go with the graphs, and also looking at ways to differentiate gamers who prefer DRM-free, open drivers, etc. to those who game on Steam with proprietary drivers. The first of these should make the results far more readable, while the second should provide some interesting insights into this divide, or maybe if the divide is more of a blurry line.

After many years of floating through space on the back of a missile, following a successful career in beating people up for not playing Sega Saturn, the missile returned to earth. Upon returning, I discovered to my dismay that the once great console had been discontinued and Sega had abandoned the fight to dominate the world through 32-bit graphical capabilities.

After spending some years breaking breeze blocks with my head for money and being mocked by strangers, I have found a new purpose: to beat up people for not playing on Linux.

I'm waiting on those Fall sales before I move back out of question 12's "None" category.

The DE question results took another turn for the worse. :P

Openbox, i3 and i3wm should all be merged into none/custom.

Yeah I don't really understand what happened there since I deleted one or two of them a while back... It could be that Fedso added them back in because he thought they should belong there - I'll ask. Otherwise it might have been a C+P issue or something, I'll sort it out.

Either way, I don't want to get too hung up on the DE and Distribution questions - which for some reason people care the most about. It's a survey about games, not what people are running on their machines. Same reason I refused to split up the Debian-based distributions - that's what DistroWatch is for. Also the reason I've considered removing these questions in the past because they're the source of the most fanboyism and have the most potential stat manipulation through repeat responses.

Agreed. I use openbox, and I certainly don't consider it a desktop environment. It's a window manager, just like i3 and i3wm.

Arch based is up to 30% - cinnamon desktop has dropped other than that I have to ask about question 11 with the "didn't buy any games" selection is that newer or are Linux users buying less games?

Is the Intel driver question a joke or are people clueless?

Yes, from what we can deduce people are buying less games but more expensive ones. have a look at the previous couple of surveys for a bit more on that.

The Intel driver question has been covered a lot since its inception as well. I've always asked people to come forward and explain themselves but never got anything on here. The "don't knows" make perfect sense, but the proprietary answers are either Optimus users answering incorrectly or they are using some Intel propriatary blobs for CPU drivers (which do exist and are easily installable on recent *ubuntu distributions).

I doubt there are so many i3 users around. Maybe some people confused it with the i3 processor...

i3wm user (and first-time commenter) here. I was always surprised that there are so many of us. However, I have replied "None/Custom" since it was pointed out some months ago. Before that I replied i3wm because I figured that was the interesting information in that question. I was well aware that it is not a DE but then the Steam Big Picture mode is not a DE either imho. After all whether DE or not, the choice can affect how games run, e.g. sometimes fullscreen does not work well in i3.

I don't wish to change anything about the survey since I don't care much about this question. I'm just trying to give some insight as to why one might reply i3 or openbox.

Edit: forgot a "not"... fullscreen can be weird in i3

Debian always has been and always will be.

(Ha, I can start a distro war, because we don't know the numbers! :-P )

This makes me think of an interesting question to add to the survey: "How often do you use Steam's Big Picture Mode?" Always|Using SteamOS|Every day|Every week|Rarely|Never, though maybe add an option for "on the weekends only" or something.

I can't recall if there has been any questions about Big Picture Mode in the past.

Nice.
"Not using Steam at all" should be added then (not for me, though).

I don't underestimate the value of i3 or Openbox or other window manager. I'm an Openbox user as well. I just find odd for i3 users to be over three times more than Openbox, more than LXDE and just under Mate. I insist that a lot of people who voted for i3 happen to have i3 processors and were confused.

This was actually meant for SteamOS users since when I made the question over a year ago people were calling SteamOS "just Debian with big picture". I still don't know what to call it... I know it technically has Gnome 3, but that's the desktop fallback option. Anyway, the idea was just to see how many SteamOS users there were.

Quoting: GuestYou’d have to be seriously drunk to think that question is about processors. The number is valid. LXDE is of no use to someone with a gaming computer, it’s just not as good as Xfce. A tiling manager like i3 brings something else to the table, and a good number of the people who answered that probably use Arch… People who use Arch want to configure their system to their liking, not use something premade like Ubuntu.
10.62% use proprietary intel drivers. Is this number valid as well?

Well... it's only 12 votes and it has been discussed over and over that the number could well be valid for those using Ubuntu-based distributions.

More probable is to be just a mistake, like the i3 wm - i3 processors.

As a Arch User I used i3 for about a week and I also gamed on it. It was wicked fast, and I'm not fond of light weight window managers (openbox, lxde, xfce) - but it offered productivity.

Once I learned the Gnome Hotkeys/Shortcuts/Accelerators to Tile Windows i3 was history. And I learned that Shellscape Gnome Extension adds advanced Window Tiling fairly well.

That really doesn't seem super likely...
