Heads up gamers! System Shock: Enhanced Edition is coming to Linux, and the developer said on twitter it will be a native port.

Twenty one years later, Linux is getting System Shock, and an upgraded version too. This has been the most surprising thing I've heard for a while.
@retroDoomer @humble Yes, we are planning on releasing OSX and Linux versions in the near future.

Sidenote: The developers also re-confirmed System Shock 2 will stay as a wine-port, as the source is lost.
Straight from the developer, to me, and now to you. Thanks to Luke for sending the initial tweet to me.
About the game
You're a renowned hacker, the most notorious cyberspace thief in the corporate world. Caught during a risky break-in, you become indentured to Diego, a greedy Trioptium exec who bankrolls a rare cyberjack implant operation. After six months in a healing coma, you awaken to the twisted aftermath of a terrible disaster. Where are the surgeons? Why is the station in such disrepair? Slowly, the chilling realization that something is very wrong creeps over you.
Once a prime corporate research facility, Citadel now teems with mindless cyborgs, robots and terribly mutated beings, all programmed to serve SHODAN, a ruthless A.I. There's scarcely time to think before it unleashes the first terror...
Twenty one years after its first release, System Shock is back!
The Enhanced Edition adds a modern touch to this true classic gem, without taking anything from its unmistakable atmosphere.
See for yourself that the game that has been called the benchmark for intelligent first-person gaming, has lost nothing of its ability to keep you on the edge of your seat.
Wouldn't it be the first native game released by Night Dive? I thought they only sell dosbox/wine/scummvm wrapped oldies. They also did Spirits of Xanadu which was a Unity3D title.
I've been playing the Macintosh Full Voice Edition for many hours, I can't wait to play this on Linux!
Many thanks Night Dive!
Anybody knows what happened to System shock's 2 source code?
I believe Jimmy Hoffa made off with it.

Not really. They published The Original Strife: Veteran Edition as a native source port which rocks!
I head they lost the source code to System Shock 2 and that's why they wrapped it in WINE. It would be cool to see System Shock 1 compared against the original graphics in a article suchas this.
There was supposed to be a recovered version of the Dreamcast source for SS2. Was it a fake?
Yeah, that is what I wonder.

I would have loved to see a HD version of System Shock 2 as the series is legendary akin to Duke Nukem 3D.
Which reminds me - Whatever happened to the Golden Eye Source Linux Port? Someone @ GOL should get in contact with the devs and ask.

I do agree that SS2 is better, but the original is still a pretty mean little game.

How can they port something they don't have the source to? Or enhance it, other than replacing some textures?
Are you talking about SS or SS2? Because it doesn't look like SS's code is lost.

It's noted and linked in the article.

You're mixing up two games.

Ah *duh*
I somehow thought it was an enhanced version of SS2 we talked about here. Now I understand.
