Valve look like they will become the ultimate trolls with a new leak. It looks like they included some files directly related to Half-Life 3 in a recent Dota 2 update.
Thanks to SteamDB as usual for noticing such things.
They found these files included in Dota 2:
hl3.txt
ai_basenpc.txt
rpg.txt
I'm not entirely sure how you could accidentally include them, so I'm sure it's to either get people hyped up in some way, or a big troll attempt.
The website Valve Time took a more in depth look at the files, you should check it out. They say this at the end which sums it up nicely:
I still haven't finished Half-Life 2, and only finished Half-Life 1 in the last few years, as personally I don't find them to actually be as amazing as others think. I am however interested to see what they can do with a new game in the series.
They have Source 2 working pretty well now, Steam Machines are on the way, and the know it will probably sell really well, so I wonder if it will become "the real thing".
What do you think about it?

QuoteSo, it’s important to realize that there’s absolutely no information as to exactly when or where these definitions come from. Meaning some or all definitions could be years old, used in some early iterations of projects that may or may not have died internally at Valve. Or, these are precisely what Valve is using, today, in some future title. Stay tuned as always...

Yeah, yeah I know. Every time I pick it up I'm just not hooked by it for some reason, it's odd. I should probably dedicate some time to actually finishing it
I'm in the same camp here.

A Linux exclusive or even early release of something like HL3 would be a disaster. Imagine the number of angry posts that would appear all over the Internet from inexperienced computer users who accidentally wiped their Windows installs trying to install SteamOS (which last I heard doesn't provide a dual boot option by default) on their gaming machines just so that they can play it!

HL2 and ep 1 & 2 are amazing, I cant believe there are people here than haven't played it. They wont be able to know the reason of why HL3 has been waited this long, since the history at the end of ep 2 was very interesting, and then Valve just decided to not release the third part.
Btw, I have spent 50 hours on HL2, its very fun, and maybe because since I played it on a laptop, it runs better on linux than on windows, its a good linux port.
Related to this rumor, its probably false, but would be good if Valve would provide a HL3 copy with each steam machine, it could help it.

I think HL1 was amazing for its time but even with modern remakes like Black Mesa it still feels a bit dated (but, hey, it's 17 years old!). HL2 (11 years old!) has good atmosphere and story.

My prediction on this :
Valve will announce Half Life 3 for ALL OS + Vulkan Support for HL3 - it will be the first game supporting FULL Vulkan API in cooperation with Nvidia and ATI.
In the meantime on release date due to technical reasons, the game will launch for SteamOS for the time being.
The technical reasons will be something like for example:
"Since we are not able to get the performance we want in Windows with Vulkan API we will delay the release for Windows for some months. We want to provide the best experience for our Windows Users thats why we delay the release. "

There has been some time to release some (early) specifications of Vulkan, but they didn't, so I suspect them to release it with some game instead of just a demo. This will be most likely a Valve game on Source 2 engine, and since Dota 2 reborn is already out this might be Half-Life 3 (or less likely Portal 3)

For those planning to give HL2 a go I'd recommend Half Life Update - improved graphics and some bug fixes. It's a quality game! Now if you'll excuse me there's a headcrab on my *&*(&HBVHVV nmhujh

I don't think they'd have to make HL3 a Linux exclusive on PC in order to push Steam Machines, if that's the plan. The previous games were on consoles too, and there are likely many console gamers who would pick a Steam Machine over PlayStation 4 if that means they can play HL3. I don't think us PC gamers are going to make a difference between Steam Machines being a success or not in the short run either way, but if they're enough of a success that more publishers find it worthwhile to port their games to Linux, that should make desktop Linux more interesting to PC gamers in the long run.

I didn't finish HL2 either, not even HL1. It never fixed me, basically I could say I didn't like the game at all.
Count me in also. I owned HL1 and Blueshift from the start, tried to play them both more further in many, many occasions, but always ended up feeling i'm forcing myself to it. Bought 'em due the massive hype at the time, i suppose. The HL games are obviously not bad, no, just can't get into much feeling playing them.
Then again, the Jedi Knight series... i consider 'em like the best games ever.

They have invested millions in Steam OS, plus a big part of their reputation. If they want to be sure that it is a success they have to provide a big exclusive.
Besides, as long as windows is around we are going to have problems.
That is most likely out of question. Otherwise Gabe Newell would contradict with himself.

I had some special love for the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series. Nobody knows why, the studio even went bankrupt on the titles as far as I know.

As someone who's first exposure to Half Life was the Orange Box series on the 360, I can't say I'm super fond of it. I played the HL2 games quite a few times (as I had a lot of time and few games), and then finally the original a few years ago, which admittedly is a bit of a blur.
The HL2 series is really well designed, enough that I'll certainly play the third should it come out; However, I could never get completely immersed. This could be a very personal thing, but something about the way you and the guns handle never felt quite right to me. And the game overall has always felt quite "engine"-y to me, if that makes sense. It also tends to have a bit of that "Theme-park" effect where I never feel like I'm too much a part of the story. I'm on the Pirates of The Combine ride, watching colorful characters act out a drama while I fuck with their personal things laying about :P

To be fair, I haven't finished HL2 either. I think I'm just an idiot, I can't get past the first level where you're on the roof.

It's less unique 11 years after it was released. At the time it was much more of a marvel. It's still a great game, but it's been done arguably better since, with newer tech.

In fact most of the HL2 hype was located around its graphics and physics engine, as well as its cool NPC that any uber-geek wanted in his bed for one night.
Nowadays, anyone can do HL2 physics, and while graphics are still great, well, they are 10 years old now. I think you still get a great story and gameplay when playing through HL2. I had a lot of fun doing so and I pretty much enjoyed its universe. I know I'm a sci-fi whore, but I think my opinion can still be relevant :p

I once had a game which was praised for its physics simulation, but I ended up with a box stuck half in a wall in the very beginning, probably the tutorial. It was in some kind of cellar if I recall correctly... Unfortunalety, I neither recogince the scene in HL1 nor in HL2, but I still think this was what made me stop play one of them. Unfortunately. Never got into them when I got them later, 2013 or 2014. So, I'm adding to the crowd...

Never got into HL till I beat Black Mesa, too bad the last 2 chapters on Source2 are incomplete.
Obv HL3 is in development but to admit that would require them to commit to releasing it. I don't think they're willing 2 release HL3 unless it's perfect since their base expects godlike fun & story.
HL3 SteamMachine skin would own & sell like hot cakes.

I totally can relate, I still haven't finished it either and regard it as really "meh".
I wouldn't be surprised to see a new "orange box" from valve containing lots of 3's(Half-Life, Portal, Team Fortress) within several months of all their hardware dropping. I have a hunch that at a minimum we'll see a Team Fortress 2 "reborn" made in Source 2 as a Linux exclusive to coincide with the launch of steam machines.

I could reproduce it. It was the original Half-Life (non Source):
