Not the news I expected to hit my inbox this week. Fishing Planet an online fishing game aimed at realism is heading to Linux.

I found an interesting video on it, and it looks okay:

The developer confirmed it's coming on their Steam forum:
QuoteNext week we will start Linux tests. Along with a SteamOS tests.

About the game

Not sure how many of you it will interest, could be amusing, could be as boring as fishing in real life!

I couldn't even imagine that there was such a game :)

I enjoy fishing in real life: Such a game is fish-friendly and saves you a lot of travel costs, not to mention that you wont drown and can have real toilet breaks.

But I still doubt that game is perfect for me, at least till they release the "Filleting and pan frying fish" DLC.

I enjoy a good fishing game, and it's fantastic to see this one coming to Linux. (Now if only we could get some decent basketball and football games!)

Football manager is on Linux... Don't know if you meant ones where you actually play as the players though.

This seems like a great way to chill out, although the multiplayer stuff (if forced) is disappointing. I'd be happy just collecting trophy fish and whatever by myself. Had a ton of harmless fun playing Fishing Resort with my nephew on his Wii. :)

Looks pretty! The devs were probably enjoying fishing in WoW too, huh? :)

I'm down to give this a try. Sometimes, I just want to play a game that's chill, a man can only swing swords and shoot aliens for so long before he wants to take a break and do something more relaxed.

Last time I had a fishing game that I enjoyed on the PC was Trophy Bass 2 by Sierra.

I love that these niche games exist, even though I don't personally play any of them. They are exotic little flowers in the gaming flora.

Crack open a cold one and 'big game' hunt!

I don't get fishing/hunting games. I really don't.

I never tried any, but still...
I can imagine sitting for hours in nature and waiting for the fish to bite is relaxing, somewhat adventurous, you're in nature and all that. But a game hasn't got lots of these features...

But it's got a lot of features nature doesn't. Like being able to go fishing for a short stint anytime you feel like it and doing it from the comfort of your own home. And not having to sit for hours and wait for the fish to bite is a big plus in my book. I'm not exactly the restless type, but real fishing is a bit boring. ;) I prefer to enjoy nature in some other way.

It's the same thing as with those flight simulators where you fly, in realtime, for hours to do a regular, simulated landing at recreations of real airports. If you are into flying that can be a really cool thing to do. It's just not for the masses.

Or that truck simulator we got on Linux as well. It's about simulating a real-life activities that, for the right persons, are fascinating.

Yeah, but in simulators you're actually doing something. In these games you're essentially doing nothing in front of a lit monitor. I don't know - I guess to each his own, but I won't get it in a million years.

Hell yeah! Linux needs some games like this. I would also like a deer hunter game as well. I dont hunt in real life, but i do love how sneaky and stealthy you need to be.

Yes!! I've been waiting on a fishing game on Linux for forever!!! :) (mostly serious)

Did you watch the video? They call it a simulator, but it seems you catch something twice a minute. Not very realistic, but less boring than in real life, and nothing compared to the tedium of many of the more realistic simulators.

What exactly don't you get though? I certainly get why people might like MMOs or engage in the horror that is competitive online FPS games, even if I'd personally rather chew on rocks while sitting naked on an anthill than play them. To each their own, as they say.

Have you ever been fishing in real life, sir? There is a whole ton of strategy involved (as well as some luck). The more you learn about fishing, and the more effectively you employ the strategies you learn, the more fish you will catch. It is almost like a real life vidya game in itself. So, not only can you replicate that on your electronic device, but if it is a good simulator, and can help teach and develop this myriad of strategies that can help one to become a better real life fisherman (or woman), as well as having a blast while playing the simulator.
