Grow Home from Ubisoft owned studio "Reflections" looks like it will come to Linux, the game looks pretty damn interesting too.

I shot off a message to my Ubisoft PR guy who has yet to respond, but why else would they add a Linux depot to Steam if they weren't at least toying with the idea eh?

We've seen other titles originally published by Ubisoft on Linux, but this studio is directly owned by them which is pretty interesting.

About the game
In Grow Home you play as BUD (Botanical Utility Droid), a robot on a mission to save his home planet by harvesting the seeds of a giant alien plant. On his quest BUD will discover a beautiful world of floating islands that are home to some rather strange plants and animals.

Grow the giant plant and use your unique climbing abilities to reach ever higher ground, but be careful…one wrong move and it’s a long way down! Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

(*) Not.

Grow Home is made with Unity so probably easier for Ubisoft to port than their other games. Grow Home is also one of few Ubisoft games on Steam that does not require uPlay which makes it even easier.

Would love for Ubisoft to port their UbiArt-engine to Linux so we could get Rayman Origins / Legends and Child of Light but i'm not sure how uPlay-functionality would work on SteamOS...

Yes! Ubisoft is a commercial game developer. If cost of porting game to Linux < profit of Linux port then just do it.

I've had my eye on this since it was released for Windows and I would love to be able to play it on Linux. As far as I know, it uses Unity3D, so a Linux version shouldn't be too hard to make, as long as they've chosen their plugins wisely.

Another of my "most wanted Windows games" from last year, A Story About My Uncle, also recently got a Linux depot, so I hope at least one of them comes out soon, even though I really need to work on reducing my backlog of games.

The only other game I can think of besides this, without uPlay (granted I don't research too much on them) that would be a treat to port over is South Park Stick of Truth by Obsidian. Both are good games and their success spoke on their own without the need to be some sort of fatigued franchise plagued by sequelitus.

Anyway, fingers crossed for this.

Also, it is worth noting the developer himself who made Grow Home expressed some interest in a Linux port, but I believe wanted to confirm a way to do it with the publisher's (Ubisoft) permission. It's in the Steam forum, I'd have to search for the thread again, so don't take my words verbatim.

Well, not (mostly wishful thinking on my end). He didn't say much at all except
Hey Dablim, no plans beyond PC for the time being, but if all goes well then who knows?

I'm a simple artist and don't have a PC at home, so I'm personally holding out for a Mac release!

Better than nothing though!

Don't forget Beyond Good and Evil! It's even on GOG, and I'd love a Linux version of it.

I think this is the main reason why games are ported.
Most times, it's probably not like:
Publisher: ... and now you are going to to a Linux version!
Developer: Oh no!?!
... but more like...
Developer: May I?
Publisher: Sure, why not...

Yes, this is speculation.

I edited my post (see link and citation). I was incorrect in stating that. But it still wasn't a negative response.

Personally I'd love to get Child of Light on Linux, even if that means installing uPlay. Assassins's Creed would be nice as well.
Keyrock 5 Nov 2015
Might & Magic X is also a Unity game, I'd love to see that on Linux. Of course, M&MX is bound to Uplay, so that would likely have to be ported as well.

I'm not really interested in this game but if it does well I would love to see other Ubisoft games comes to Linux. I own a bunch of Ubisoft games that are Windows only at the moment.

i want "call of juarez"
burnall 5 Nov 2015
And I want "Far Cry Primal" with a day 1 release. I guess only in my dream. :)

Personally I don't care that much about the mainline Ubi games like Assassin's Creed, but I'd love to see the UbiArts stuff like Valiant Hearts and Child of Light get ported over.

Still, it's nice to see a big company like Ubi recognize our existence.

I think one of the things that makes Ubi interesting is that they're a big company with a solid base, and as such are in a good position to look for untapped markets. A term which describes Linux well, being a developing part of the game market in itself, which is already just beginning to flourish. A bit of attention from the larger players could lead to more games in future, and more adoption of Linux on the consumer level. Which means an increase in those Steam percentages.

Ok, ok, that's too big for first try on a new territory, Grow Home, then the UbiArt games after those we see ^^

Wouldn't the ultimate recognition from Ubisoft be uPlay for Linux though? ;)

Yes, and as much as I hate it -- for the sake of virtual historical tourism via Assassin's Creed, I'd welcome uplay on Linux wholeheartedly. AC is the major reason why I keep a windows partition -- I know that they aren't terribly good *games*; I'm interested almost exclusively in the environments.
