It seems a leak (the rest is very Windows focused) from slides showing off AMD Crimson is reporting much better Linux performance in certain games.
The way I'm reading it, is not that the games are say "112%" (double and then some) better, but 12% better. I think it's using marketing speak to look better than it is, but with that said it's still some impressive improvements. They have needed it, as we have known for a long time that AMD Catalyst hasn't been competing very well with Nvidia.
Looks like the real stuff is due out today, so we will keep you posted if we hear any more! Exciting though, and hopefully this isn't just new per-game optimizations. I really hope those are just example games they tested, and that they have been able to do general driver optimizations on Linux.

Quoting: pete910Still room for improvement then by the looks of it :P
indeed.. though i have 1920x1080 main monitor..
but afaik metro is always running at 2560x1440 and then either downscaling or upscaling to correct resolution.

Oh... AMD drop support for my GPU :/ Now HD5000 and 6000 is unsupported... Thanks AMD...

It looks to be getting better, although i have also seen terrible performance with ATI cards in Windows as well. The driver built for ATI in amiga systems was pretty amazing though.

Hmm - a few percent improvement are sadly just baby steps towards the Nvidia bar.
I sure hope the day will come where we do have an alternative to choose from when it comes to Linux gaming GPUs, but it takes much more than this to get there.
Any improvement is still of course a step in the right direction. But the best to get out of this story is that they at least are working on it.

Strictly speaking, this release does support the HD6000, but it's the last one to do so. I highly recommend switching to r600 drivers unless you really need something that only the blobs support. r600 is more stable, is comparable for performance (some things worse, some actually better, but generally very close now) and tracks better against kernel and xorg updates.
Im trying it, not allow to install - error - unsupported hardware. R600? Hmm Im testing it also but performance in my game is much worse than on Catalyst and few games even not want start or have graphics corruptions :/

Quoting: Guest* It's a 16:10 resolution, which is a bit odd.
It's likely the display's resolution of the developer who did the benchmarks. Developers tend to value vertical space, hence the 16:10 ratio. Please, don't see conspiracies where there are none... ;)

This is a weird one, with previous driver 13.9 I think, I had to play Alien Isolation at 1440x900, or it immediately crashed. I started it up with this driver and it was ever worse, like 10 FPS less than before.
I put it up to higher resolution 1920x1200, just for laughs to see it crash again. Now it works with this resolution and even higher FPS than before. So for now I am happy with the new driver, as it brings HQ fun to me :D
the card is HD7870
