It's a shame, but it certainly looks like Mad Max isn't actually coming out for SteamOS & Linux. We covered it initially thanks to being told about the press release, but nothing since then. The developers have been utterly silent on it, which is quite annoying. It's one thing to announce something and publicly state it's no longer happening, but to be totally silent on it is just weird.
It's highly probable having SteamOS in the press release was an "accident", but it's also likely it was planned and silently dropped.
The sad thing is, the Steam forum post asking about it has now been locked after it was totally derailed. In part this was thanks to the moderator "Laptop65" who also moderates a number of other Steam forums, and he's quite anti-Linux. I won't link to it directly, as I don't want to start a witch hunt.
Time to move on, and carry on supporting the developers that bring us lovely games. People keep tweeting and emailing in asking about it, so I'm telling you now: move on. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

On a different topic: Do you have any contacts to Codemasters? I just got a Steam key for Dirt Rally and would like to know if a SteamOS/Linux version is planned, not that unlikely since DiRT Showdown has a Linux version.

I suppose he is anti-linux because he can't adjust his small mind to change.

The mod involved is incredibly hard work. He's not an official source, but as pointed out the article, if the devs actually had news regarding SteamOS, they would have shared it by now. I've spent a small fortune in games over the past 5 weeks or so and had to forgo plenty of excellent material in the process.

I did a little research and this guy is neither an employee of Warner Bros nor Avalanche Studios, he is a subcontractor and so he doesn't know anything more than us.

I'm a mod for Warner Brothers, not Steam (although I do help out many game companies on here, WB is just one of them).
Laptop is a steam moderator who is in contact with me. He is however, not an official WB employee.
Myself, WBElderPliny, and RocksteadyGaz are employees of WB.
We are here, but Laptop is also helping us browse and report on the status and pass along feedback.
I ask that you all treat him with the respect he deserves; he is helping make the community a viable resource for as wide of audience of PC players as possible.
But since SteamOS have been removed of the original press release I think he is probably right, the game will not come to SteamOS.

I can't remember what other game forum that guy was moderating but remember him being really sarcastic and snarky to everyone. To be fair though, if I had to moderate forums for a living then I would also lose the will to live.

Ha, after seeing that reddit thread where someone made a script to look for all Linux related posts by the guy, there is no doubt in my mind that he's a Windows troll.
His answers to the question 'why doesn't X come out for Linux?' is "what's wrong with Windows?" The guy should not be moderating on Steam's forums with that attitude.

In the forum of Stranded Deep, the local moderators considered a thread asking for a Linux port with "+1" posts - which didn't derail or anything - as spam and deleted it. They felt like everybody else was doing it wrong allowing such threads and they were the only ones paying attention. :-/

Doing a simple "+1" post is actually against Steam's own rules, someone quoted it to me before but it's true.
Nothing wrong with meaningful discussion, but I'm sure that Laptop moderator does it on purpose to give him a reason to lock it, as he does it so often.
Just another hurdle for us in the wider community, stay strong and polite folks.

But having people express their will to buy a product if it meets certain criteria (Linux port) is far from spam and very far from say rickrolling. Most times, a +1 does not add anything. An argument doesn't get any better by someone signing it as well, it has to stand on its own, on it's contents. But for peopling interested in a product, it makes a huge different if it's 1, 100 or a million. There, the number of supporting people is a decisive difference.

I remember reading that thread a while back, and what you are saying was my thought as well.
It's quite possible that the moderators were (willfully?) misinterpreting the rule because it was never intended to apply to such a purpose as when to gauge interest in a product-release. Rather it was intended to stop people from simply adding "+1" to every other discussion, without contributing arguments or anything else themselves.
In essence, their closing the thread could be interpreted as "+1 for windows only, end of story!".

I'm sure half the PR people who make these announcements don't even know what Linux and SteamOS are. They're just posting the information given to them. But how does communication break down so badly that they end up with the false information in the first place. If the company truly has no intention of porting to Linux, who fed the PR person that information and why?
In the case of the Witcher 3, it's an even bigger goof up. They posted a huge banner with the Witcher 3 and SteamOS. I saved it as proof. It's on my computer and my server. How can someone be that misinformed about reality? The simple answer would be: they're not - they just jumped the gun, and both games will see Linux versions. A more complex explanation might be a frightening look into very disorganized and confused companies.

I'm hoping the Witcher 3 is waiting for a 'Game Ready' driver from nVidia or something (would that mean Vulkan ready?) They released one for Fallout4, and whatever other games came out that day.
Here I thought we have left the driver per game days behind us...
I'd still like for this moderator to be wrong, it doesn't seem like he really has any actual contacts, and was just being a dick during the whole thread.
