I absolutely love Starbound, but it's one game I keep having to remind myself to wait for the full release. It's going to be awesome, and I'm glad I've been waiting after they have revealed some plans.
The developers are planning three major updates before the official "1.0" release, and each will be pretty big.
The first will be a combat overhaul, they have adjusted the engine to allow for unique weapons that will also allow modders much better options for weapons. It uses a new scripting system, so even random generation weapons will have even cooler attacks.
Much like the weapons found in Borderlands that have unique elemental powers like fire, acid, electricity etc Starbound will also be using this for their weapons, giving even more possibilities.
They have built a similar system for monsters too, so we will in future see some more unique monsters in the game to make things even more interesting when exploring.
The quest system will be completely different in 1.0 too, and all quests will be replaced by then. Another great reason to hold off for the main release.
Vehicles will be added properly, and will use their own system. This will allow multiple people to ride the same vehicle, and it will make them persistent. So you could create a garage for them, and park them there to show them off.
There's a lot more to it, and it has me really excited! I hope they are able to update their game to allow them to have their SteamOS/Linux icon back soon too (more info here). You can still download and play it on Linux right now though. I shot off a quick tweet to the developers about it and they replied with this:

I still don't understand what made them have to lose the Linux symbol. their game seemed no different than many other ports. Nevertheless, it has always worked great for me on multiple distributions.
I've been playing the Unstable builds for awhile, I like to keep my custom mods up to date with all that's going on. it's quite an amazing game. especially with certain add-ons like Starbound Side Stories and the megaman mod. which even great mods like that are going through a lot of growing pains because of so many changes lately. Plus with native Linux binaries that are included for use with modding the game, It's a class A game to me.
It's insane what their engine allows you to do, there is absolutely no limit to what you can add to the game. the new weapon skills are fun and interesting.
Plus the AI is a lot smarter than it once was. they will actually try to corner you and work around obstacles much better than before.
Lots of new planet and environment changes as in new backgrounds for planets and a lot of nice random structure and design blobs that give planets a more lively feel.
I've already sank over 300 hrs into this game and it still doesn't get old with me. there are very few games like that these days for me.

If it didn't launch correctly on SteamOS, the icon will be removed by Valve.

hmm that's interesting. I assume it's because of the extra launcher? I guess they haven't tested Planet Explorers yet, because they do the same thing. And yet still have their Linux symbol.

Trine 3 has their icon though, strangely enough, since they use a launcher and their menus don't work with a gamepad (nor a pen tablet, so I'm out of luck); the only reason I can play it is my Steam Controller (which defaults to gamepad mode for Trine 3, so it doesn't work "out of the box" ).

That's understandable, I was only being sarcastic about Planet Explorers. But this goes to show that there should be a Linux icon along with SteamOS then. Because on Linux it works perfectly fine, just not on SteamOS. unless there is a marketing scheme they are working on here. Which I can understand it would be a small strong arm tactic to get devs to comply with the SteamOS "standard".

I hereby publicly announce that I hate Starbound.
Moving on, I hope this 1.0 release makes me hate it less as 5 friends & me have copies. I am planning on revisiting at some future date in the hope that it will be fully Baked - however I am extremely cautious after the roller-coaster ride. And the community around it is a turn off making me shiver, they're like Nintendo fanboys, young, ignant and indignant.
