About the game
StarDrive 2 is an exciting and evolutionary step forward for the StarDrive franchise. In this eagerly anticipated sequel, the core mechanics have evolved to incorporate a turn-based strategic layer, featuring spectacular realtime battles. As the galactic ruler of your race you will lead your people into a procedurally-generated galaxy, exploring and expanding your space empire to greatness. Exploit planets, navigate asteroid belts and overcome deep space dangers while handling interspecies relations to gain the upper hand. Conduct diplomacy and espionage, make alien friends that will deliver thriving trade treaties – or enemies that will seek to exterminate you at all costs. Research new technologies and design powerful warships to defend your claims. Discover the extensive lore of the StarDrive universe by encountering many dozens of anomalies, heroes, and galactic mysteries that will ensure no two games will ever play the same.
I did have a weird issue with the game not loading, and as soon as I loaded Steam in terminal to see what was wrong it loaded up, so I don't know if there's some weirdness on Linux, or if I wasn't patient enough.

Odd that it got all those negative reviews... at least the first hour game is great fun so far.

The reviews shown on the homepage don't do it justice, they are all old reviews and a lot has been added and fixed in patches over time. The developer is listening rather well it seems.

QuoteI pretty much fell in love with StarDrive 2 for being so much like an updated Master of Orion 2
How accurate is this? Because so far every single "updated Master of Orion 2" I've tried has failed to be an actual update over MOO2.

Quoting: NouserI played about 9 hours of StarDrive 2 and I think MOO2 is still a better experience. No nostalgia factor either, because the first time I played MOO2 was pretty recently.QuoteI pretty much fell in love with StarDrive 2 for being so much like an updated Master of Orion 2

I do agree, MOO2 is still better, which is a shame.

That's sad. I guess I'll stick with MoO2 and DosBox and its shitty multiplayer support.

This was a game that I actually refunded when I got it at launch. It was just a departure from the furst one that took away some good things that made it different than other 4x games. I rather enjoyed the pausable real time nature of it.

Moo2 Multiplayer works quite well in a hamachi network. I've hosted several games this way, and the hamachi terminal programm works like a charm.

Based on this and the last StarDrive2 article here I purchased this a month ago, but did not get around to testing it until now (version 1.2). When chromium was running, the game failed to start thinking I was already playing. When steam was running, it would crash in mono (maybe because its 64-bit only and steam is 32-bit only?). Even after eventually getting it to start directly from its executable and manually tweaking its prefs file, the end result was occasional segfaults at best or crashing the entire X server at worst. I am guessing from the comments here and the earlier StarDrive 2 thread that it worked much better prior to the Unity 5 update. However, you should definitely test this yourself if you purchase it right now, because even though this was my first refund request to Steam, it was denied because I did not test it immediately after purchase.
