Well now, Syber discounted their Steam Machine line (all three models), and now all but the highest price machine are sold out. This was a one-day sale, and sadly we missed covering it here, but it's worth noting that it did well.
The discount made their cheapest model only $299, which is pretty damn good for what you are getting. So it's not surprising they sold out of their reasonably priced models. I'm starting to really like Syber. Their Steam Machine doesn't look half bad either, don't you think?
Hopefully people won't just stick Windows on it, we could have a big bunch of new SteamOS users on the way folks. I wish we knew how many sold, as they may have only had a very limited stock to test demand.
The fun thing is, with sales like this you could have upgraded the machine to be more powerful and keep it at a more affordable price, heh. I wonder how many people did that in the rush.
Hopefully Alienware will do a sale too sometime soon for the upcoming holidays.
Some you may have missed, popular articles from the last month:
Wow, really nice Offer ! To sad we're too late.
Hope they are going to produce more of their Steam Machines in the Future and ship them to Germany too.

This might mean they wanted to get rid of Steam Machine business quickly.
Please, let me be overly pessimistic with this.

Quoting: DuckeenieI follow loads of gaming/tech/Linux sites and haven't seen it publicised anywhere prior to this. Nice that the sale they had and told nobody about is gaining them so much publicity NOW!
Uh, it was advertised directly on the front page of Steam, AND in the Steam client itself.

Quoting: rustybroomhandleHopefully this doesn't mean they sold poorly and that there was only one production run.
They are testing the waters right now meaning there was probably only one production run assessed from the beginning, with the primary goal of getting an idea of the demand.
However small the quantity might have been, I can't imagine it selling out that quick to be a bad sign under those circumstances.
Some of you guys seriously need to hang up some of those motivational posters at home.

Well, of all the criticisms against Steam Machines, "It costs more than an Xbox One" is one I see often. At the very least this is showing that selling well at discounted prices does have an effect. If HW folks are getting a commission for games sold via the SteamOS store, they might be able to offer these discounted prices more readily.

...ordered one pretty much as soon as I saw the article on Ars. If nothing else, at $300 it should make an epic HTPC replacement for my aging ION1 machines.

I waffled on getting a base model yesterday. A thought finally hit me this morning: I could have sold my current rig to make up spending $300 on a new rig. If Syber does this again in the coming weeks, I know what I'm getting. :D Upgrading the video card/power supply sounded cheap as well.
Also of note: optionally in all of Syber's packages they are basically giving away Portal 2, Rocket League, headphones, and a mouse pad as well. Same as with their current Windows packages although the games options are different. Yeah, if they can bring that price down to at least $399 I'm in.

With last weeks news, I got more pessimistic about it, though I wasn't overly optimistic in the first place...

I wonder if there are people outside the linux community than value the fact of having a full-console experience on the couch instead of games like gta5
