Well now, Syber discounted their Steam Machine line (all three models), and now all but the highest price machine are sold out. This was a one-day sale, and sadly we missed covering it here, but it's worth noting that it did well.

The discount made their cheapest model only $299, which is pretty damn good for what you are getting. So it's not surprising they sold out of their reasonably priced models. I'm starting to really like Syber. Their Steam Machine doesn't look half bad either, don't you think?

Hopefully people won't just stick Windows on it, we could have a big bunch of new SteamOS users on the way folks. I wish we knew how many sold, as they may have only had a very limited stock to test demand.

The fun thing is, with sales like this you could have upgraded the machine to be more powerful and keep it at a more affordable price, heh. I wonder how many people did that in the rush.

Hopefully Alienware will do a sale too sometime soon for the upcoming holidays. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

i hope most of these buyers are new too linux, we can use some new blood :)

This actually applies to Linux too for whenever you need proprietary drivers, sure it depends on distro, but I went through hell trying to install the latest proprietary nvidia drivers in Linux Mint, and still failed.
Generally agree with most of your post, but this--I have to figure the key word here is "latest". Installing the proprietary nvidia drivers on Linux Mint that Linux Mint has available to install is easier than snapping your fingers (I'm actually kind of crap at snapping my fingers, but clicking the mouse, that I can do). I can well believe that if you want to go bleeding edge, it gets a lot harder. This is not quite the same as with Windows, where just installing a driver for some things at all is apparently often a pain (I don't know for sure, haven't tried to install Windows in many a year).

Some of you guys seriously need to hang up some of those motivational posters at home.

Just LoL! :D

I think these are good news for linux gaming. ;)

I follow loads of gaming/tech/Linux sites and haven't seen it publicised anywhere prior to this. Nice that the sale they had and told nobody about is gaining them so much publicity NOW!

Uh, it was advertised directly on the front page of Steam, AND in the Steam client itself.

Nice cave man impression there at the start.

Exactly. I actually increased my IQ by 300% by switching from Windows to Gentoo back in the day, then halved it when I switched to Xubuntu a couple of years later. Happily it went up just enough so I could use the toilet without help again after I installed Mint instead.

I wonder if there are people outside the linux community than value the fact of having a full-console experience on the couch instead of games like gta5

I genuinely think a lot of people will put Windows on, the second they realize Fallout 4 and GTA V don't work in Linux. Other than that it's an absolutely great offer for pre-built PCs.

Syber Steam Machines are built with standard desktop parts making them easy to upgrade.

Didn't buy one because I don't need one right now, but it would be my #1 choice.
Same here. Love them

Their Steam Machine X is also sold out now. Not a bad piece of hardware that, if you've got the spare cash.

Hey, I'm someone who bought one of these. Just made an account to tell you all that what I've seen of SteamOS benchmarks means I'm still a little iffy about gaming on Linux. I'll probably see if I can get a dualboot going, just in case future updates make SteamOS more viable, but I will probably be installing windows in the short term, as much as I'd like to use an open source OS.

So you're basically here to make us sad? ;)

No, seriously...
Which one did you get?
How's it running?
Would you consider to dual-boot at least? :)

I can't tell you how it's running just yet, as it's not gonna be here til Black Friday at the earliest, but I wound up with the Steam Machine P, i5 4460, 1 TB HDD, 8 gb RAM, and a 970 for ~$650. And I want to run Linux - that's why I'm here, I was googling linux gaming info - but I don't want to see performance take a hit because of it. I'm going to run SteamOS for a little while at least, just to see what it's like, but if I notice any issues I'll at least dual boot. In the event of widespread Linux gaming support I'll definitely make the switch, which is entirely possible if Valve pushes hard enough IMO.
(also do y'all think I should go with Cinnamon Mint instead of SteamOS or what)

I'd be interested how it works out! Maybe you'd even like to write an article about your experiences?

You will have performance hits. For some games it won't matter, like if it's 120 fps or 100 fps, for others it probably will, to be honest.

Distributions are always a matter of personal taste - and endless discussions. :)
But you can try out many of them using live DVDs.

Wow, that's a pretty sweet deal, considering a 970 is half of the entire price bought separately. And yeah - you should probably dual boot. Most of the guys here tend to be a bit overzealous when it comes to Linux, but if you really want the full gaming in the living room experience you want to be able to play Windows games as well.
