The Wine developers are continuing towards a stable 1.8 released, and they have released Wine 1.8-rc2.
They have fixed a total of 45 bugs this time around, but no new features as they are in a code-freeze right now to make the 1.8 release as stable as possible.
See their full changelog here.
I always have mixed feelings about using Wine, but for old games that will never be ported I see no reason not to use it especially for games you already own.

This version should should resolve the crash with Tomb Raider 2013 at start (regression since Wine version 1.7.50):

Question:
Do these two fixes mean anything as far as DX10/11 support is concerned:
d3d11: Make blend_factor optional in d3d11_immediate_context_OMSetBlendState().
d3d10core/tests: Add test for NULL blend factor in OMSetBlendState().
Or is it something else entirely?

Personally, I'm not interested in going anywhere near WINE again until DX11 support is included and functional enough to play something like Fallout 4. Though hopefully by the time that happens, there will be other AAA Linux games which I'd substitute anyway.

nice to see these efforts, but hopefully wine will become obsolete one day. I have not been using it for months, lots of games and stuff runs natively by now - let's keep continuing that.

I think Codeweavers should work with VALVe for to bring an official compatibility layer to SteamOS.. keep in mind that most of the steam catalogue will NEVER be ported to Linux... You know.. EA.. Activision.. Ubisoft.. Bethesda..

Wine has made some great leaps these past few years and has become great for games, I rarely use it but I'm glad there's something I can count on when I want to replay some games from my childhood.

Direct3D 11 patches from Crossover are getting dropped in git master one by one. It is not there yet, but I suspect in spring Wine git we will be able to run DX11 games at rudimentary basis.

I don't think it should be called official or anything...more like pick several games known as running very reliably performance wise under Linux and just add them to the mix. They still would need agreement from publisher though.
