Wine 1.8-rc2 released, brings more stability

By -
The Wine developers are continuing towards a stable 1.8 released, and they have released Wine 1.8-rc2.

They have fixed a total of 45 bugs this time around, but no new features as they are in a code-freeze right now to make the 1.8 release as stable as possible.

See their full changelog here.

I always have mixed feelings about using Wine, but for old games that will never be ported I see no reason not to use it especially for games you already own. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Quoting: mironice to see these efforts, but hopefully wine will become obsolete one day. I have not been using it for months, lots of games and stuff runs natively by now - let's keep continuing that.
I doubt WINE will ever truly become obsolete. Bear in mind, WINE is made to do more than just play games. Games are not its only purpose.

Well, unless MS Windows becomes obsolete and/or goes open source. Even then it wouldn't mean that WINE would become obsolete; it just would require a lot less active development to be maintained. It's probably not likely to happen any time soon, but with MS mimicking Google in order to compete (Bing, Windows Mobile, etc.), turning their flagship OS into a Free Software project to support a distributed ad platform might not be out of the picture. Considering the recent release of the "Code" IDE on Github (including a version for GNU/Linux) it wouldn't be the first time MS has flirted with FOSS.

Could someone please tell me how did he/she managed to install rc1 with winetricks and make it work? Since last update whenever I try to install a program/game wine complaints saying "bad exe format pathtothefile" and winetricks says all the time "wineserer not found". It's driving me a bit mad, can't seem to find the solution.

I saw on a forum that could be due to a broken link in one of the libs, can't remember now which one, but didn't work for me.

I simply compiled rc1 and rc2 from source and I've never seen this issue.

How are you installing WINE 1.8 anyways?

WINE will never become obsolete. Otherwise: How do you want to install older games like "Dark Project" or "System Shock 2"? You should look also backward instead only forward.

Via apt with sid repositories. I didn't think of compiling them, though. I will give it a try thanks :)

Is dotnet40 support broken in 1.8-rc2 or is it just me? I got a dotnet40/xna40 game that used to work in 1.7.53 (albeit without sound but whatever...) and now I get mscoree.dll errors :/

EDIT: nevermind, this was clearly a case of user error sooo yeah :P

In my experience WINE was very useful and ran almost all the games I wanted. However I don't use it as much as I used to... and the only games I play with it anymore are really old ones like StarCraft 1, Age of Empires 2 (the original one for LAN play) and Need for Speed 2 SE (split-screen rules), Atomic Bomberman, etc... Those are all classics that can ONLY be run with WINE ... or dual-booting Windows XP which is never gonna happen. Yeah, I know some of the before-mentioned games run on W10 but not all and it's even harder than using WINE... You know Linux is great when you can run Windows apps that won't even run on Windows nowdays.
