Good news Linux gamers wanting to play Windows games, as the Wine developers have announced a code freeze to fix up bugs and regressions for a big 1.8 release.
This is great, as they focus a lot on new features, but sometime I feel they personally need to step back and make sure they aren't breaking older games when focusing on all the news ones coming in.
Here's to hoping Wine 1.8 is a good release. It could be something we need if years down the line SteamOS doesn't do much for us.

Quote1.7.55 is the last Version of the 1.7.x series. It's likely to see Wine 1.8 until end of this year. Until then we'll have weekly release candidates. Please give them as much testing as you can, you're also welcome to improve translations in case your language isn't perfect yet.

I am really torn about Wine. It's sure an awesome piece of software, but personally I got only one game ever to run in it in a way that didn't immediately make me want to hit that "Restart" button and reboot into Windows. That game was Guild Wars 1. And that's a while ago. Maybe it's because of the games I tried to run in it (mostly MMOs), but at least for me Wine never turned into a serious alternative for dual-booting.

@Kimyrielle: Wine really improved in the recent years. Give it a try. Besides DX11 lacking which is increasingly becoming a blocker for newer games, many games work very well there.
I don't dualboot, and have quite a lot of games that I play in Wine.

Still waiting for functional DX11 support. I wonder what will happen first. DX11 support in Wine, or official Witcher 3 release for Linux?
DX11 support or no, until CDPR says that the Witcher 3 port is definitely cancelled I'm not going to buy the Windows version. If/when it comes out on Linux, I want my purchase to count as a Linux sale.
I really hope that Witcher 3 comes to Linux before DX11 comes to wine, because otherwise Linux sales will likely look pretty poor.

I won't do it either. Even though I bought Witcher 2 way before it was released on Linux, and finished it in Wine, I won't do the same thing with Witcher 3, because at this point I don't want to reward slowness or failure to make proper Linux releases.
