The amount of content they add with each major build is quite impressive, and this update is certainly no different,
The have overhauled the combat which includes tons of new unique weapons, and special attacks for weapons. I think I am most excited about the vehicle system, as you and a friend can quickly travel land and sea together. See the release notes here for the full scoop on what's new.
I am waiting to hear back on if the SteamOS icon will return soon, and I will update this article if they message me back. They did say originally it was going to return with this update, so hopefully they sorted their issues. I can confirm it still launches fine on Ubuntu, but haven't had a chance to test if it's fixed on SteamOS yet.
You can find Starbound on Steam. Remember though, it's in Early Access.

It certainly does look like they've done a ton! Good for them for doing Early Access well, albeit for a loooooooooong time now. I certainly hope they're going to get the SteamOS compatibility fixed soon. I've pretty much totally switched to SteamOS because I am really enjoying how it fixes all the vertical sync and controller compatibility problems that have plagued PC gaming (Windows very much included) for me for a long time.

I've been playing the unstable version for the last couple months, it's amazing at all the new features and work going into this game. it's also been quite a bit of working keeping my custom mod up to date from all the new changes with weapons. really cool stuff all around. the next major release shouldn't be to long from now, it seems like a lot of work going into the story and the mysterious ARK for the 1.0 release.

Man I had to watch my brother play this yesterday and we both agree that it's still underwhelming. If it weren't for his friends restrictions to authorized video games he would play Terraria or other games with his friends.
I mean weird funky SFX and walking half speed when moving backwards - an attempt to marry realism and surealism. Sure walking backwards IRL is slower, but should that really be reflected in a 2D pixel game?
I'll answer that now - NOoOOOooOOOoOOOoOOoOooooOOOOOOOOOOO.
Unless the core mechanics get fixed Starbound will never be "a good game", it'll always be a bad game with cool new stuff grafted on top of broken mechanics.
Starbound is like trying to put garlic in your coffee or replace a beef hamburger patty with tofu.

Well, the game has been in early access for two long years. It's not vaporware but WTF. Costumer respect doesn't exist anymore it seems.
