Third release candidate of Wine version 1.8 is out

By -
Wine development team released today the third release candidate of upcoming stable version 1.8
Because at the moment Wine source code is in feature freeze, no new capabilities were added this time. Only 40 bugfixes were introduced.

To learn more about this release pleas visit this announcement.

The source code for this release is available here:
http://dl.winehq.org/wine/source/1.8/wine-1.8-rc3.tar.bz2
http://mirrors.ibiblio.org/wine/source/1.8/wine-1.8-rc3.tar.bz2

To get the most recent changes, a git repository is a good starting point.

Binary packages should be available for a download as soon as the build process is finished.

Ubuntu 15.10 has yet to receive any working beta branch version for WINE, despite it being out for a couple months. Hopefully this can be remedied soon. I may not use it very much these days, but it's nice to test with it and have the option.

I've emailed the PPA admins to see why it's so out of date.

Thanks, I'll check these out when I get the time. Hard to find a reliable PPA, which is why I tend to stick with the launchpad / official one.

I was unable to find a ppa providing wine newer than 1.7.44, in Ubuntu. That's
too old for my tastes. I'm right now working on compiling wine myself.
This third release candidate still doesn't fixed bug #39403. That would fix the
built in browser in steam. Staging has provided a patch but still has yet to be
merged.

What's wrong with this one? It has "official wine builds" of 1.8 rc3 for all Ubuntu releases starting with Trusty and even one for 12.04 (Precise). I rarely use wine for anything but these packages seem to install and work just fine, at least on Mint 17.

The best way for me to manage Wine versions and my Windows games/apps on Linux is PlayOnLinux.
Each new version of Wine is available on less that 48h and you could associate a different Wine version for each app.

Debian have:
1.8~rc2-1 501
501 ftp://ftp.pl.debian.org/debian unstable/main i386 Packages
So ppa should be able to just grab the code and compile it for Ubuntu

Thanks to those pointing out the ~/...wine-builds ppa. The staging package was
compiled by Lackner. He wrote the patch for the steam browser. Good deal.
