Turok: Dinosaur Hunter (Steam, GOG) takes the best from the N64 and PC versions, puts them into a new engine and then released into the wild. It looks like the developers are planning a Linux release too.

See this post:
QuoteRight now we are polishing the Windows version to the best it can be. Other platforms should follow soon.

About the game
Turok is back and no dinosaur is safe! When it was first released in 1997, Turok introduced gamers to a world teeming with cunning enemies, traps, puzzles and deadly weapons all within a vast 3D environment ready to explore. Now the classic game has been restored and enhanced with a new visual engine and exciting new features to sink your teeth into!

New features include
- Support for high resolutions, and widescreen
- Improved gameplay and level design
- OpenGL for video backend to provide portability and support for vertical sync
- Dynamic lighting, bloom, FXAA, enhanced water effects, lights shafts and more
- Ability to freely rebind all keyboard, mouse, and gamepad inputs
- Steam Achievements (obviously you won't get these on the GOG version) Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Oh man, this will be amazing. I remember it was tough as balls back in the day, thanks to getting lost in the levels... But it was also amazing. :P

So much great news these days, can't wait to play all those incredible titles. The guys at Night Dive are doing really great, and though the Linux versions of System Shock and Turok are not released yet, I just can't hide my eagerness.

I did not play the original, but I loved Turok 2. I love when the old jewels are resurrected.

I remember this game from way back in the day on the N64. I never really got what the hubbub was about, I thought it was okay, but a lot of people have fond memories of this game so it;s cool those folks will get to play it again on Linux and scratch that nostalgia itch.

If Turok 2 comes out for Linux, I'll freaking buy it without hesitation.
I tried this enhanced port of the first one on Windows, and it runs wonders.

It's because the game is actually pretty good. The setting, weapons and gunplay are very good and fast, but the game was very limited by it's hardware. The aiming system on the N64 was fine, but the engine ran very slow (specially on the second game) and the focus on platforming of the first game made jumping a nightmare.

As I said, I tried the Windows version of this enhanced Turok, and all of those problems were gladly fixed.

I think it comes down to the artistic direction. It had a universe of its own, and was not one those based on aliens/demons/cybersoldiers, games that were the vast majority of genre. Also it was among the first fully polygonal FPS, and the gameplay, for a console title, was quite nice.

That games like this are still under copyright protection is simply madness. Current copyright laws do not fit to the modern world!

Beside of this turok was was a great game back in last century when the first 3d hardware came up.

This is awesome news. Not just for Turok but also because this same studio will be handling System Shock 3. If they are willing to port Turok to Linux then it gives us good odds that they will do the sdame for SS3.
