Exciting news for FPS fans. The Arma 3 developers have updated everyone on what's happening with the Linux port, and it looks like they are even going to work on the BattlEye anti-cheat system.

This is important because it means we would be able to play with everyone else, as we are limited to servers that don't use BattlEye.

QuoteOur partners at Virtual Programming have been working hard on updating the client port betas to 1.54. We're testing these updates in-house right now. There are a few issues that need to be solved before we can release them to you as well. Meanwhile we're discussing with VP and BattlEye whether it might be possible to support the anti-cheat service on the port platforms in the future. We'll keep you updated!

This is great news, as I was impressed by the performance of the port and was really hoping they would do this!

For those who missed it, there is a Linux version of Arma 3 on Steam even though there's no SteamOS/Linux icon. They didn't know if they would be updating the port test to a newer version, but they now are which is great news.

I still wouldn't suggest buying it until this big update is released, and think carefully if BattlEye doesn't get supported, as it's not a cheap game.

Unfortunately this isn't something which can be fixed by BI or TFAR/ACRE teams. This has to be addressed by TeamSpeak. And this isn't likely to happen.

When I played Planetside 2, we used TeamSpeak radio in a configuration that allowed commander->squadleaders and also squadleader->squad chat just by pressing a different button to speak. What does TFAR/ACRE2 do above this?

Also, why do you say that TeamSpeak need to fix this, if it's TFAR/ACRE2 that are using DLL plugins? Is it that plugins only work on Windows? Because I'm not sure that's the case - I have (or had, stopped playing after a re-install last year) a plug-in to display an overlay of the name of the person speaking in-game. So some plugins certainly seem to be supported.

As a person who doesn't own the game yet but has played a couple of the free weekends (and Battle Royale mod), Arma 3 coming to Linux is great news. It stinks that a Linux player will be held back from the full multiplayer experience, but for me, I could live without those features for a while since I haven't used them yet. I'd hope Teamspeak integration would happen sooner than later since there are official TS Linux servers and clients -- it wouldn't be completely new development ground for them. Despite trying to be optimistic, I would be a little hesitant to buy it for Linux if I couldn't play Battle Royale. Hmm....

TFAR will get a linux port, but the dev's will wait on the update: https://github.com/michail-nikolaev/task-force-arma-3-radio/issues/1030

In ARMA communication is the most important thing. And any group above 4 - 6 people regularly make use of those radio mods.

I've switched my entire communication to Discord. First mumble, then ts, then only discord. :)

Some clans I know have switched as well. No more paying for TS servers and no more client...

Their reply was a bit ambiguous, they could have only been agreeing with what they need to being in the Arma 3 Linux client, not that it will be ported for the next version.

Keep us posted though, will be interesting to see if they do support us in future.

TLDR, is it possible to play with windows mates?

As long as it won't come down to communication or other .dll related mods: Yes.

For example: Altis Life and Battle Royal servers shouldn't make any problems. Vanilla Arma servers neither.

The most important points imo are:
- aligning the version to the actual winz one
- battleye support
- ingame peripheral support (wheels, joysticks etc.)
- mod support

I do not see a Linux client for Discord??

I don't use a client, I use it right in the browser and chromium is my client then :)

Why has everyone gone off TS, I quite like it, Easy to use, works well. server setup is simple and works across all PC platforms! I don't get the problem with it.

Planetside's 2 voip is somewhat of an overlooked gem to me. Been able to shout to people near for ammo/health and what not is/was damn handy. As well as squad/platoon chat.

IIRC TS only supports plugins as .dlls and this excludes them for use in Linux. Correct me, if I am wrong. Would love to be wrong on this point ;-)

....

Yes you are wrong.
The plugins in my TS3 plugins folder are .so files.

I have the same question. I mean, I understand Mumble because it's for real free and open source and exists in Linux server repositories. But I still stick to TS3 for the intuitive client. I don't pay for a hosted server because I host it myself. Doesn't every clan have an IT person to host?
