This is lovely news, Atari Vault a new official collection of 100 classic games is heading to SteamOS & Linux

Sounds like it will only be for Steam too:
I can't wait to give some a blast on my Steam Controller:
I wonder what titles exactly will have online multiplayer, as that could be hilarious for some classic titles. Nice to see stuff getting extra features like that too, rather than just dumping old titles up in a neat package.
It releases sometime in the Spring, so keep an eye out for it.
Thanks for the additional info Wired, and Daniel for the email.

QuoteAtari will release 100 of its classic games in a single package for Steam, called Atari Vault, this spring, it said today. So far, it promises to include Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, Tempest, and Warlords in the package, with online multiplayer and Steam leaderboard support.

QuoteIn addition, Atari’s press release promises “precision control” via the Steam Controller, which could be quite appealing if done correctly. Many classic Atari games like Centipede originally used a trackball controller, which few PC users today have access to. But the Steam Controller’s unique touch pads can mimic the feel of a trackball quite well, so they could be excellent for playing these classics.

Some you may have missed, popular articles from the last month:
I hope ET is in this pack ;P
I do wonder what games are in this pack, and I'm quite upset we don't see more of these anymore, back in the PS2 days we had things like "Sonic gems collection" which put 13-ish sonic games on one disc for a cheap price, where nowadays you get them all separately which costs more if you want them all.
I do wonder what games are going to be in this pack, Asteroids and centipedes are in there which is great, but what else? and will they be upgraded in any way? will they have interesting art to the side of them because they don’t fit today’s screen sizes? etc

Not really into those games, but just reading "right now we're targeting a release for Windows PC, and SteamOS, with Mac support coming later." made me smile. :)

This is nice I guess, but I don't trust this version of Atari after their mishandling of the D&D license and Alone in the Dark. I'm on the wait and see approach.

I actually really liked E.T.... Once you understood how to actually play, it wasn't bad. I'm not sure what people were expecting for an Atari game at the time... Cinematics and skill trees?

I'm not gonna hold my breath, but it'd be nice to see Gauntlet Legends... Yeah it's a much, much later game - but it was sooo addictive when it was at the arcades!
If this is going to add a whopping 100+ games to my Steam collection though, I will pick it up irrespective...

Quoting: CybaCowboyIf this is going to add a whopping 100+ games to my Steam collection though, I will pick it up irrespective...I doubt it will. More likely it'll be a single shared Steam launcher and game library entry for the "vault". All the various articles are talking about a single package.
Personally I'm not going to touch this one. I did enjoy (some of) these classics back in the day, but the simplistic arcade gameplay just isn't my idea of fun anymore.

If it's priced fairly I will definitely check this out for playing with my kids.
