Escape from Tarkov is an interesting looking Russian-made action MMO that is apparently going to come to Linux too.

A month ago, the Russian website playground.ru interviewed the Lead Game Designer of Escape from Tarkov, Nikita Buyanov. Here's an interesting snippet from the interview:

QuoteИгра будет доступна только для PC, или вы готовите ее выход и на других платформах?

Буянов: Escape from Tarkov точно выйдет на PC и Mac. Мы также планируем выпустить игру на Linux. Более того, текущая версия уже поддерживает геймпад, поэтому консольные версии игры также будут представлены публике, только значительно позже.

Translation:
[interviewer]: Will the game be only available for PC, or do you plan to release it on other platforms?

Buyanov: Escape from Tarkov is granted to be released on PC and Mac. We also plan to release the game on Linux. Furthermore, the current [beta] version already supports a gamepad, thus, a version for console will be available to the public, but at a significantly big delay.

The visuals certainly look rather impressive, and it would be one of the most graphically beautiful games to come out on Linux.

I've never heard of the developer before, so hopefully they will end up being a good bet for us. They said they are planning to release it on Steam and GOG.

About the game (official)
Escape from Tarkov is the hardcore and realistic online first-person action RPG/Simulator with MMO features and story-driven walkthrough.

With each passing day the situation in the Norvinsk region grows more and more complicated. Incessant warfare in Tarkov have sparkled massive panic; local population flees the city, but those who stayed are looking to improve their fortunes at expense of others. Having accepted the new reality, “savage” Tarkov locals - Scavs flocked into well-armed gangs and started the redivision of the city. Nowadays, Tarkov is separated by unseen borders, controlled by different groups. Gain-greedy gunmen would go any length to have their way, including murder of civilians and direct confrontation with the two private military companies.

The players will have to experience living in the skin of one of the mercenaries who survived the initial stage of the Tarkov conflict. After choosing one of the sides – USEC or BEAR – player’s character starts to make his way out of the city. Tarkov is sealed off by UN and Russian military, supply chains are cut, communication with operational command is lost, and in these conditions everyone has to make his own choices of what to do and how to get out of the chaos-ridden metropolis.

Aww yeah I was actually impressed by the stuff originally showcased for the game.

I could honestly use a gritty grey gun porn shooter MMO in my life, if this went Linux native, I wouldn't pass on that.

Love the voice acting. Like when the character throws a grenade and shouts "here's a present for you, bitch." I have heard people complaining about English versions of Russian games, but they do not realize that it is actually quite hard to translate Russian slang accurately. For exampe the previously mentioned phrase is only 3 words in Russian.

Long story short, learn Russian, play in original language. :)
Man, as a Russian who doesn't live in Russia and doesn't get to interact with slang much (I only speak Russian with my family & their friends), it cracks me up every time I get to hear Russian slang (movies, when I play with Russians, Russian games, Russian sites, etc).
The Russian slang is just as rich as the language itself :) some phrases amaze me every time.

The part that concerns me:

Escape from Tarkov is the hardcore and realistic online first-person action RPG/Simulator with MMO features and story-driven walkthrough.

MMO could mean an always online requirement just to play a single-player game.

I kinda don't think it's a single-player game. It would be cool if it had an offline SP mode, but the feeling I'm getting is that this is like a DayZ or H1Z1 type multiplayer survival game, but with an added element of PvE and story, rather than just a sandbox to gank people in.

It has been confirmed that the game offers an Offline mode.

This game is actually made with Unity 5.... unbelivable...

That is a welcome surprise.

I would love a Linux version of Escape From Tarkov on GOG. Best of both worlds.

If it can be played offline, how can it then possibly be a mmo? Unless that term has been redefined lately?

Wait, really?!?!

The wall textures, air particles and plants scream cryengine or unreal.

Do you have a source? I'm honestly surprised.

The developers themselves never call it an outright MMO, they state that it has "MMO features".

Shame it's made on unity. It's going to have very very poor performance. You can even see it runs like crap in the video's. I know it's not finished yet, but it will still run like rubbish even when it's finished.

They have a FAQ, is there. Some early commenter already posted the link.

It seems like that Russian's are more interested into Linux, perhaps due to NSA spying issues with Windows in last years? As for the game, It's kind of a COD in Russian way to me.

From a purely hardware perspective consider that they see AMD and Intel / IBM x86 as "western processors" which makes ARM more desirable to them.

Also, the whole UEFI and CPU blobs no doubt cause some concern, consumers have legitimate reasons to mistrust the US after NSA.

Guess who is the king of ARM? Linux ;P

Also, Russia is a big place, not all Russians are good at technology and not all Americans are fat and obnoxious.

This game looks hella fun.

Not my genre, but looks nice!

Still hoping for a native AAA MMORPG in Linux which is not too PvP centric.
