Slime Rancher is quickly becoming one of my favourite indie games. It's a cute and silly game, and I have fallen in love with those stupid little smiling slimes.
Note: I have had access to a DRM free build for a while, and my Steam key was also provided by the developer.
The games graphics while simple, are really nicely done and make me feel pretty happy when playing it, as does the lovely music too.
I shall give you a little screenshot storyboard of the quick rise and fall of GOL Ranch below.
I have started massing Slimes on a grand scale, just don't go telling the health inspectors will you!
The game has a day and night cycle which I didn't remember reading about, and it makes the game feel even more alive. I've seen new Slimes appear at night too. Some glow, some are big, some fall asleep and just awww so many Slimes.
Some of them are tricky too, as they escape:
I have begun to experiment:
Feeding Slimes the "Plort" (poop/money) from another type of Slime will breed something new.
It seems each slime has different needs, like some of them vanishing when exposed to sunlight.
I accidentally bred some killer rainbow Slimes :(
It did not end well:
About the game
Slime Rancher is a first-person, sandbox experience where players will solve problems and survive through mastery of their vacpack: a vacuum/cannon/backpack that can vacuum up and blast out anything that isn’t nailed to the ground.
Each day will present new challenges to players as they attempt to amass a great fortune in the business of slime ranching. While players are free to approach these challenges however they wish.
Positive reviews are pouring in all over the place for this game, and I'm really not surprised at all. It already has a big place in my heart. I can see this game going to some amazing places, as it has all the makings of a great game. If they manage to add in co-op play that would be even better, but sadly they have no plans for online play right now (I do hope they change their mind on that!).
The developer has a roadmap up here, and I will be trying this at each different stage as it evolves during the Early Access period.
You can check out Slime Rancher on Steam now, or on Humble Store to get it DRM free + Steam key.
