SNOW is incredibly interesting, mainly as it's our first proper winter sports type game to have on Linux & SteamOS, it's a bit buggy though. It's free, so no big loss right now if it's a bit iffy.
Issues
First thing, is it will probably die right as soon as you launch it, but some fine folk found out how to fix that. You need to open up system.cfg in the games install folder, and edit:
s_AudioSystemImplementationName="CryAudioImplFmod"to
s_AudioSystemImplementationName=""That will at least allow it to launch, but then you have no sound. The developer is now aware of it, but initially put it down to an "an unsupported version of Linux", thankfully more reports are coming in to debunk that.
I also see no mouse pointer in the main menu, despite moving it around enables me to select things. So, I assume that's a bug too.
The settings menu shows up empty, so I get a tiny window.
It's just as bad on SteamOS right now, no sound (but it does launch), cursor appears during gameplay and moves across the screen whenever you move too.
Not the best launch. Hopefully we will see a patch soon to address the audio issue and the non-starting issue, as I can't wait to give it a proper go.

Again, in general I'd agree with you, and I'm not saying users should be debugging the game for the devs (and I'm definitely not saying anyone should buy the DLC...). But since this is free-to-play, and early access, and the first game using this engine on Linux, I'm willing to cut them some slack. This game being available for free means that people can run it on a far larger range of hardware and software than the developers ever could have.
Also, while I don't have Windows, I hope that some folks who dual-boot will run some benchmarks so we can get an idea of how well CryEngine performs on Linux. This is something I'm really curious about, and a free game will hopefully allow more people to run benchmarks.

You DON'T must buy the DLC's. So it's free, yes.
Fishing Planet has "Ingame Credits", too but you EARN this "Ingame Credits" in game.
Again, you DON'T NEED the DLC's.

There is still room for performance improvements, but it it playable.

I'm removing it from my library for now, I don't need to fight with games to get control of my screen resolution back & having the mouse pointer vanish when the game crashes leaving me stuck until I force quit the game is annoying to say the least.
