Sad news, I was really looking forward to playing The Vanishing of Ethan Carter but it looks like I won't get a chance. The developers have come across too many issues.
They had come across some issues a few days back:
@AngryPenguinPL Still looking, but first attempts were not encouraging, sadly :( (lots of heavy visual errors etc.)

And now it's on hold:
QuoteSorry to keep you all waiting for so long. We did some tests with Linux and we experienced a lot of difficulties. Because of that, we put the port on hold for now but may return to it at some point.

Looks like Unreal Engine 4 has ways to go to fix up their Linux support properly.
I hope none of you were silly enough to buy it based on their comments about looking into it before, as you know we have a hard stance here: Don't buy it until it's on Linux and playable.

Sad news. I've been putting off playing my copy hoping for a Linux version. You win some you lose some.
I'm glad you're up front that you've already bought it.
It really doesn't help that quite a few folk on Steam forums come out with "do a Linux port, then I'll buy it", when there's a pretty obvious icon next to their name that highlights the fact that they've already bought it. It happens in a lot of the "Please give us a Linux version" threads I'm subscribed to.
Some devs might do a Linux version out the kindness of their heart, but most studios will want to see some kind of return on effort. So a thread with 200 pleas to make a Linux version will lose a lot of credibility when 50%+ of those posts have already bought it.
In my defense I didn't have a dedicated Linux system at the time I bought it. I have been buying strictly Linux games for about 6 months now. I don't like to dual boot due to bad experiences in the past so I finally took the plunge and switched my main rig over to Linux about 6 months ago. I still add Windows games to my wishlist so I remember which ones I am hoping for but my money goes to the penguin only.

@dubigrasu you're right - it's Flying Wild Hog.
Anyway, as far as I remember Leszek left the whole porting business after starting to work on Darksiders port for Nordic Games (Source. He did not leave gaming industry, but does not work on porting games to Linux.
Fact that Leszek does not work on Vanishing of Ethan Carter anymore makes it less possible that we receive port of this game.
Right, but still, Flying Hog does Hard Reset Redux and Shadow Warrior 2 so maybe with him being there we'll have more chances to get those :)

Well, I don't want to start with speculation about UE4 etc. having issues on Linux until it's released. Even if testers report differently here.
Unless the developer is open to share what the issues they exactly hit with their port, it all stays speculation. But my speculation goes into their custom shaders/effects either, since if it was UE4 native stuff, they'd have gone to Epic to have the issues fixed, and it would be in Epics interest to fix it up. Maybe they even did, and the roadmap is just too long for them to consider a port at the moment too... we won't know until the developer is open to talk about it.
Sad though, because the game looked amazing.
