I was really hoping to give Torment: Tides of Numenera a go, but it seems I won't be able to since they have launched without Linux support right now. They aren't sure if it will get a Linux version during Early Access or after the final release.

For a Kickstarter campaign that featured Linux everywhere platforms were mentioned, I am a little annoyed. Only a little, as again I didn't back it as this crap happens all the time.

QuoteWe do not currently have an ETA on a Linux version, it may or may not happen during Early Access (it will definitely happen for final release).

About the game (Official)
You are born falling from orbit, a new mind in a body once occupied by the Changing God, a being who has cheated death for millennia. If you survive, your journey through the Ninth World will only get stranger… and deadlier.

With a host of strange companions – whose motives and goals may help or harm you – you must escape an ancient, unstoppable creature called the Sorrow and answer the question that defines your existence: What does one life matter?

Torment: Tides of Numenera is the thematic successor to Planescape: Torment, one of the most critically acclaimed and beloved role-playing games of all time. Torment: Tides of Numenera is a single-player, isometric, narrative-driven role-playing game set in Monte Cook’s Numenera universe, and brought to you by the creative team behind Planescape: Torment and the award-winning Wasteland 2. We can play Divinity: Original Sin in the meantime. :D

The same thing happened with Wasteland 2, did it not? I backed this because it's Torment... Though I fully expect slight disappointment, as what made the original such a hit was the characters and writing and setting, and from what I've seen, there's not going to be any of that in this new one. I still think it'll be a good game, though, and I very well could be wrong about that stuff.

It is annoying that Kickstarted games go available to the general public earlier than some backers could get the game, but oh well, whatever. I don't Kickstart things anymore, so that annoyance will end for me before too long.

I was expecting this as the same happened to Pillars of Eternity.
Although I backed both projects and I made sure not to select beta access I am still pretty annoyed by this.
Feist Jan 27, 2016
Eh, no problem. I have actually done my best to avoid news, previews and anything else about "Torment" that could be "spoilerish" . With "Pillars" I had tons of pre-launch knowledge about the game but this time I really want to experience the release with as little prior insight into the game as possible.

As someone who gives zero ****s about early access, this doesn't bother me at all, so long as we get day 1 Linux support for the final release. I do understand how it might bother other people who want to beta test this, though.

I backed this in March 2013 for $20 (let's be generous and say £15). It was expected delivery for Dec 2014. So, already a year beyond their earliest estimation, it's entering early access for £31.

As Keyrock notes then, as long as it launches for Linux on day 1, I'm not fussed about this move. I didn't pay for beta access, so I shouldn't be hollering for it now. But as always, the lack of Linux support in their Early-Access period leads me to believe that Linux could be lumbered with bugs already squashed on the EA platform of choice, Windows.

Time will tell, I suppose.

Torment: Tides of Numenera launches in Early Access without Linux support, coming much later

And so, money from Linux users should come later too.

Wondering if this will come DRM-Free ...

EDIT : Well, this is quite old, but seems they'll distribute the game on GoG.com too.

EDIT 2 : This should confirm it too : link

Many of you have asked us if we will be releasing Torment on GOG.com. After all, they're the best place to get the game that inspired this all – Planescape: Torment. Well, good news! We're happy to announce that we've talked with the GOG.com crew and they've let us know that they would love to distribute Torment! They will be one of your options to download your digital DRM-free copies.

As far for the beta: I for one do have beta access. It came with the $80 all-digital Lore Master level I backed at. I never really cared that much for beta access, though. I was more interested in all the other goodies on that tier: the soundtrack, novellas, etc.; I'm a sucker for those. So I'm only slightly disappointed with respect to the beta.

For what it's worth, I tried it with Wine. I used steamcmd to download the Windows beta, recompiled Wine for 64-bit support, and it worked.

The first area has very low FPS on my system. I understand that's the oscilating pylons that are quite a draw. The second area, the lab, is way better. I only have 4GB of RAM, though, and the game is constantly swapping for me. Until suddenly, in the middle of the battle there, the game crashes with a Unity garbage collector error ("GetThreadContext failed"). So yeah, it's still very much unoptimized and buggy. :)

I don't really intend to play it any further. I do want to sink into it whole when it's finished.
BillNyeTheBlackGuy Jan 27, 2016
Same thing happen with Wasteland 2 and even Pillars (which didn't have early access, but a small beta). I'm not complaining since I usually play wRPGs games when their finished (I don't mind playing other genres in early access) and I didn't donate for the beta addon tier anyway.

I swear some of you people should research a game before you say anything about it. This isn't the first time this happened on this forum.

The original was amazing. I remember buying it off a $10 rack at a department store. I didn't know anything about it, but I saw it was based on AD&D so I thought I'd give it a go. I fired it up and thought, "A floating skull? How cheesy." Played for a bit, died, ended up waking up back at the mortuary and being surprised that the game handled this event smoothly as something that was supposed to happen. After a couple of hours I was starting to get that feeling that I was playing something special. By the end I was in awe of how good the story was, and how effective the game had been at transferring me into the role of the Nameless One. I've never played another RPG that was able to immerse me like PST.

This.

I don't like early access. I burned myself out on Kerbal Space Program long before the official release, and I still haven't played the release even though I've seen there are some pretty cool things that didn't exist the last time I played it. That was a lesson learned - wait for the actual release before playing a game.

I absolutely get that Linux users who backed at the beta-test levels would be annoyed though - there was never any mention that the Linux version would be later, or not available for beta access. That's always the gamble with crowd funding though. I've been burned enough times on the crowd funding now that I don't get too emotional about it. I also don't crowd fund things any more.

As you are right with your point, normally I give credit to the article's tags.

This one has : "Steam, RPG, Early Access, Crowdfunding".

There's another tag seen on some articles , "DRM-Free" that I don't see on this.

Happens with this game, and others. It seems the articulists have much information about Steam's releases than other's stores.

I don't find playing alpha or beta versions of story intensive games like RPGs to be a good idea. It's spoilery and ruins the final experience which is likely to be different form the pre-release version. So not a big deal. Wait for the release and enjoy the game then.

You are repeatedly being an arse in comments on GOL, stop it. Your attitude is starting to annoy me a lot.

It does not have a DRM Free tag, as it is not currently on any other store but Steam.

Like with all our Steam release and Steam Early Access announcements, I'm not going to mention a store it's not even on yet.

It has sense.

Thanks for clarifying, Liam.

Another game I Kickstarted. I'll be happy if a Linux version is available on release; they certainly mentioned Linux on the page. It may be like Wasteland 2, which gave free copies of the ancient original to backers long before the new version came out, cross-platform the day of release. I'd love it if they released free copies of Planescape:Torment in a similar manner.

Not that I'm holding my breath waiting for that to happen ...

On a side note, if you are interested in classic RPGs, take a look at this project:

I'd love it if they released free copies of Planescape:Torment in a similar manner.

Considering that, AFAIK, WotC/Hasbro is the current rights holder of Planescape: Torment, not inXile, I don't think that's going to happen.

(Me, I'm still sore that they let the Planescape setting, as in the pen & paper thing, die. It hasn't even been renewed for D&D 3e, let along 4 or 5. Hell, I kinda wished there was an official Pathfinder conversion of Planescape, but that's just a pie in the sky.)

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/nectargamestudios/project-resurgence/description

I second that recommendation.

I'm pretty well done with kickstarting stuff, and I don't really care for episodic games, but ..... that looks pretty cool.
