Thanks as usual to SteamDB (Note the build changes to the Linux & Mac depots), it looks like the Linux/SteamOS and Mac ports of Evolve might still be happening.
Evolve is a bit of a mystery, as it was only confirmed by Valve on one specific page which they have since updated with an entirely new layout removing the games section. It was listed along with a bunch of other games in March of last year.
I'm keen to give it a go, as I genuinely liked what I saw when I tested it on the PS4 some time ago. It will be one of our only CryEngine powered games on Linux too, so I'm eager to see how it performs.
It's a shame the community is very small now, so maybe a Linux/SteamOS & Mac port will help revive it. That will only happen if it has cross-platform multiplayer though, which would be quite bad if it didn't with an already small community on all platforms for it.
At least Evolve still looks like it's coming, but we haven't seen anything on The Witcher 3 which was announced at the same time. I do wonder what's going on with that one.
About the game
In a savage world of man vs nature, are you the hunter or the hunted? Turtle Rock Studios bring you Evolve, the next-generation of multiplayer shooters where four hunters face-off against a single, player-controlled monster. Stalk your prey, execute your attack and prove you are the apex predator in adrenaline-pumping 4V1 matches.
4V1: Grab three friends and hunt the monster or stalk the humans as the evolving beast. Whichever side you choose, you will have access to powerful weapons and abilities that deliver balanced, competitive gameplay.
Hunt Together or Die Alone: Choose a hunter that fits your play style. Whether you play as the Trapper, Support, Assault, or Medic, every role is vital and teamwork is key in surviving an encounter with the monster.
Beast of Prey: As the monster – the lone predator – you are the boss battle. Use savage abilities and an animalistic sense to wreak havoc, kill the humans and prove you are the dominant species.
Savage Planet: Neither flora nor fauna are friendly on planet Shear. Fall victim to natural hazards or use them strategically against your prey.
Character Customization: Level up to unlock new upgrades, skins and perks for your favorite class: hunter or monster. Earn your infamy on the leaderboards and become the apex predator

I think what made this games community die off was how they did DLC content, basically it was stupid where allot of the games content was locked behind paywalls, AFTER already buying the game (reviews I'm going on here). Plus there was some STUPID paywall items such as paying $5 for a different COLOR gun, there is allot that this game had as nice feature but trying to ask everyone to pay for every tiny bit was a HUGE mistake by their part.
What they should have done is included everything as unlock-able content for free then release large expansion packs later down the track, but pissing off the community was their first choice, tools!

Also, this game was crushed by other AAA games. It's a different game, and nowadays, the gaming market has very little place for games like this one. I mean, Call of Duty can sell up to $200 worth of DLC and nobody cares.

How bout they actually release all the content with the base game for their 60€ price? Add some basic mod support and you'll have a much better chance at success. Most successful MP games have followed that path in the past. These guys tried to milk the crap out of the hype they managed to generate and it backfired on them. I'm glad it did. We need less garbage DLCSkins, skins people. It doesn't affect gameplay in ANY way. How can people even remotely get annoyed by that? It's not just skins. Hunters and monsters are available as DLC, too and they definitely impact the gameplay.
And it's no wonder that people get upset about DLC if you're looking at the prices [30 €/$ for the base game -> 80 €/$ including the important DLCs…]
I was replying directly to Scaines comment on the skins.
As for DLC characters, so what? It's not like they have an advantage, it's all fairly balanced gameplay wise.
Would you rather they split the community with map packs?

Why waste time porting a game that's dying? The low percentage of Linux users certainly isn't going to help the numbers. There is reason why this garbage lost a lot of players, and I certainly don't think Linux players are going to waste their time on this game either. I rather they port another popular AAA game instead.

I hope that it does make it's way to Linux but I wouldn't buy it. My very first game of Left For Dead I got vote kicked from the server with good reason. I don't enjoy playing with others as much as I like playing against others. Makes co-op games oil to my water. If it does come to Linux I hope they drop their prices, at the moment it's kind of still laughable.

Absolutely pointless port. Why even bother with a dead game. I think they sort-of hope that Linux gamers are uninformed but you know - Internet. This game was dead two months after release - I really do not understand why they would port it now.

There would be no more excuse to not build in cross-play. Rocket League lets PC and PS4 players play together. It probably helps RL that it's pretty much designed for controllers though.

Haha, some of my co-workers convinced me to buy this and we played it as a LAN game a few times. It was fun, but I haven't played it since. This was during launch. From everyhting I had understood at the time was that you could unlock everything in game as long as you played it a ton. I had thought the DLC was basically just for those that didn't want to grind. To me the game is a beautiful tech demo of the newer Crysis engine.
