Want to play a 6-degree-of-freedom shooter created by the original Descent developers? OVERLOAD should fit into that category for you.

QuoteThe creators of Descent are proud to present the ultimate 6-degree-of-freedom shooter, OVERLOAD. Revival Productions is continuing where Parallax left off and creating an all-new single-player game that combines the best of classic 6-DOF gameplay with modern graphics and technology. Destroy robots, rescue hostages, blow up the reactor, and escape before the whole thing explodes.

They are seeking $300K and currently have ~19 days left to go with nearly $100K raised, so looks like they may actually hit it.

Originally Linux was a stretch goal, but it has now been included in the main campaign. Hopefully they have actually research the work they will need to do for the Linux version, as delays in other projects have annoyed Linux backers.

Looks like Descent Underground has a bit of competition

That style of game isn't my cup of tea but I wish them luck anyway. The more quality games on Linux the better.

I was a big Descent fan at the time of Descent 3 (didn't have the pleasure to discover it before), this would be an instant buy for me.

I am amazed that they kept the deformed cube as the basic building block in level design for the reboot more than 20 years later. And in contrast to Underground Overload puts singleplayer first, multiplayer later.

On the one hand I really feel obliged to back that project, not only because of the nostalgia of Descent being the first original game I bought in a store for my first self-owned PC, but of course also because the Linux version isn't a stretch goal anymore. On the other hand, I'm worried, because the Descent community at large should have amassed pledges soaring this project well beyond its goal already.

Even if I won't send them some money on KS over the next weeks, I still upvoted their entry on Steam Greenlight.

Modders could really have a field day with those cube-based levels. And I prefer the singleplayer over multiplayer, so this game definitely gets my vote over Underground.

For anybody who hasn't spotted, there's a playable Linux build available to backers, and with 4 hours left on the clock, it looks like it's going to hit its goal. Last chance to get onboard before the Kickstarter campaign ends.

Funded!

That is going to be an excellent game and I am eager to play it next year :)
