Valve have also updated the Steam beta client, and it brings in official Vulkan support plus some really handy Steam Controller adjustments.
The Steam Overlay has initial support for Vulkan, it may work, it may not. As usual for the beta client it's the first step towards it.
There are two Linux specific fixes:
Also some useful Steam Controller stuff:
I've tested the on-screen keyboard from the desktop, and it does bring up the keyboard if you click-in the left thumbstick, but I can't seem to get the input into any app. It also brings up the Steam client as soon as you hit done, which is a little annoying.

Fixed an issue where toggling the overlay in fullscreen games could sometimes result in a loss of keyboard and mouse input

QuoteOn-screen keyboard is now available from standard desktop mode without running Big Picture as minimized
Improved stability and window placement of desktop on-screen keyboard
Reduced size of desktop on-screen keyboard.
Added the ability to use other controllers alongside Steam Controllers. Games with XInput support will use whichever controller is active, other games will prefer alternate controllers when present.

As to keyboard overlay, I have the same problem since the feature was implemented for minimized steam (focus on keyboard, not the app I want to write in). I have googled the question and nobody seemed to have such a problem, so I assumed, it was something with my installation (gnome 3.18, ubuntu 15.10). I know this is not the troubleshooting board, but just in case. Is there anybody here who can actually write a text with steam controller overlay keyboard outside steam client?

Speaking of controllers... I still need to replace the xpad driver in linux44 with one from steamos to get my xbox360 wired controller running. I remember seeing some talk of those improvements reaching the mainline kernel long ago. What gives?
Or is it my system only?

Xbox 360 wired controller should be the easiest case there is, and it is running out-of-the-box on my Debian stable with kernel 3.16's xpad driver...

What?
It was tongue in-cheek joke about how complains how Vulkan is forever delayed and too late, how Steam Machine never gonna pick up and Valve has abandoned it.
Very excited about PR push of Vulkan and nice and steady improvements of SteamOS/Steam Machine stack.

Quoting: PeciskI've been guilty of getting impatient with Valve myself on many an occasion. I have to keep reminding myself that Valve works on Valve Time (read: at a snail's pace) but they generally reach their destination... eventually.Quoting: amonobeaxQuoting: PeciskSteam Machine is dead! I remember seeing some talk of those improvements reaching the mainline kernel long ago. What gives?I have a similar problems too with my xbox 360 controller, which doesnt work at all on many games (even sdl2 games) and on some others it works properly, but a cheap ps3-like controller works properly on all of them. In my case the steamos-xpad didn't change anything.

I wished they would fix the bug with nvidia 358.x where steam just crashes if you set a category: https://github.com/ValveSoftware/steam-for-linux/issues/4073
