Great news FPS fans! Arma 3 will see an update on the Linux port to version 1.54 tomorrow! Not quite the current version, but it's a step closer and there's more good news.
There's two major things included in their update blog, which I will quote:
QuoteWe do however see good support on the port platforms, so we've decided to continue updating them this year.
That means enough people have been buying/playing it on Linux for them to think it's worth continuing to update it. That's amazing news and shows that our platform is strong enough for a game like Arma 3 to stay on it. Hopefully they will upgrade the port to official status this year.
The next bit I was hoping they would do:
QuoteWe can also say that BattlEye anti-cheat support should finally arrive to a future update of the ports.
We knew BattlEye came to Linux (and ARK now uses it), so I was hoping it would be officially supported in the Arma 3 Linux port, and so it will be! Why is this important? It means we will be able to play on BattlEye enabled servers (most of them use it).
I was really impressed with the performance of the Arma 3 Linux port, as Virtual Programming did a pretty damn good job with it.
If you're wondering what was added in the 1.54 update, well it's pretty massive.

If only they'd properly commit to supporting Linux. I don't want to buy this game while there's a chance they're just gonna pull the rug out from underneath it and drop Linux support.

I imagine considering how far they have gone with it now, even if they dropped Linux support it would have to remain as a playable branch opt-in on Steam.
This is a very positive sign that they are updating it, doing BattlEye and all later too.

I've always thought this game looked neat and I played a bit of Operation Flashpoint way back when, but I haven't been buying games until it has the little SteamOS logo and I'm not gonna change that now!
But hopefully they'll soon have it fully supported.

What you're saying is in conflict with Samsai's motto:If only they'd properly commit to supporting Linux. I don't want to buy this game while there's a chance they're just gonna pull the rug out from underneath it and drop Linux support.

My motto is "DON'T BUY BEFORE IT'S OUT".Personally I agree with Samsai's more in this topic - I will consider paying for a game only if it is officially on Linux.

Err, there is no Linux/SteamOS icon on the Steam page for it... I would never have known it was a Linux port if it weren't for this article.

Great news, indeed. Hopefully it "graduates" to official sooner than later.

My kind of game, but as a few have noted - no Tux, no Bucks. Hopefully they bring it fully up to date, put out an official statement and I'll be all over this instantly.

Isn't Windows version 1.56 already?

Its a good port and I intend of playing ARMA3 more once I figure out howto get my AMDGPU CIK 390X working with latest MESA, and ARMA3 working with that (at present its taking too much of my time to fix so I have put off using Linux until a kernel 4.5 gets released.
And yes Windows ARMA3 is 1.56 with a performance pass patch in beta (not sure if that is 1.56 or 1.58..)

Me too. I really really want to see an official release (and the commitment that implies) before shelling out the cash.

Fine, fine - some of you don't like buying Linux games before the final release. It's understandable, but don't act all smug about it, as it's because of the "idiots" who've already bought Arma III and will buy it in the coming months that you'll finally be able to play the game. Anyway, great job VP and keep up the awesome work.

I actually make it a point not to fund anything (like Kickstarter), but when it comes to games that I can actually play I will front money to help it.

Hmm, I must've missed the post that smugly called people who bought this game already 'idiots'..

Fantastic news - Huge Arma fan, HUGE. I bought and have been playing it on Linux and was a little worried that they wouldn't keep the updates coming, especially the new expansion 'Apex' ** which is due out soon.
** I've already pre-ordered it even knowing I might never be able to play it, yes I'm that big of a fan.

It's pretty stupid that all my friend should downgrade their clients to play with me, so I'm not going to buy this game before they promise that they'll update linux client sync with windows client.
