QuoteWith experience in software development, you should be familiar with hardware issues. The average game, when porting only has to consider control configurations for one game; this package has 42 distinct control schemes. The number of configurations is quite astounding, more than average modern game. It take a long time work through these things. Still, the Linux version is coming shortly. Launch has also exposed a few issues on the Windows side that we're going to patch (for the benefit of Linux too) before the Linux build is released.

It would have been nice to have this simply mentioned to begin with, then the outlook would have been more positive. I am a big fan of open communication and they failed here, but it's great to see it's coming still.

Original article
Another developer going the silent route on previous plans. Atari Vault was confirmed by the developers to be releasing on Windows and SteamOS/Linux, but Mac later. Now it has launched with no hint about Linux.

To save you going to our old article linked above, here's the image:
image

It released yesterday with no mention on Linux/SteamOS.

I seriously don't get what is so damned hard about developers being open about previously confirmed platforms.

We have reached out to them to ask what's going on, but I doubt Atari will even see our message as they probably get thousands daily.

This guys, is why you don't pre-order, I'm glad I stick to my rule. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

AnxiousInfusion's wallet is another payment to launch without promised Atari support.

To be fair, he said "we are targeting a release on Steam OS", which sounds more like an intent than a promise. A promise would have been if he had said "we will do a release on Steam OS".

Isn't this the same publisher as RollerCoaster Tycoon World? It sounds like Atari has some serious internal and external communication breakdowns.

That's exactly the same meaning, but adjusted wording.

No great loss - nothing in there that can't be had on MAME anyways....

Don't be like that, they just haven't uploaded the SteamOS build yet. We won't have Day-1 release for all our game. They probably remove the SteamOS mentions so that Linux people don't buy the game now but only after Linux release as to avoid messing up the numbers.

Also they did add the Linux depot as the same time they added the Windows one, yesterday (SteamDB. It was no mistake, they just haven't uploaded the the Linux build yet.

This was actually the ONLY Linux game I was looking forward to lately. It saddens me that they did this. I didn't pre-order but I was thinking of buying it and waiting, but then I seen this new article.

Overreacting much? Modern day Atari has always been crooked, but I don't see what they did wrong here. Most linux game release have never been day one. They NEVER promise a day one release. They simply said they're targetting a Linux release date.

I agree with your comments about not pre-ordering. I pre-ordered Total War Warhammer as it had Linux support announced, and now on the Steam page only has Windows is listed as an OS :( I've asked the community manager what the plans are for Linux, but not had any reply. I can understand that the developers run into issues but I just wish they would keep people informed if their release plans change.

You and I obviously have very different views on things. If a developers says it will have a Linux version, and right up until release it mentions Linux, I expect a Linux release.

Call it whatever you want, but it's crap communication and I expect better.

They never promised a day-1 release, but it should never have mentioned Linux on the store page if it wasn't going to be. People pre order and spend their money on what developers say remember, only to get burnt by missing Linux versions time and time again.

Also, their wording implies a Linux day-1 release. If you read it properly. They mention Mac is after the target of Windows and Linux/SteamOS.

You may think it's overreacting, but I will keep pointing out developers that do stuff like this.

Thanks for chasing down an answer, good to see it's coming.

Never played any of the old Atari games so i might pick it up later on for the arcade versions of Centipede, Millipede and Tempest.

Tone it down? Cheeky.

I think you're fully aware of what I am talking about: Developers who state Linux is a platform right up until release, then release without Linux support and don't mention it anywhere. Forcing me and other users to chase them up for answers.

I will continue to point out developers that do it, as the majority appreciate it. We also have people who like to know what happens with games that we previously covered.

When did we suddenly start expecting day 1 releases by default?

We're 2% of the market, and like it or not, whether intentional or not, GOL represents the face of that 2%. And if you go about this thing with all the grace and tact of a British tabloid, it does a huge disservice to us all.

So yeah, tone it down.

The "majority" you speak of is debatable too - did you take a survey?

Yeah, Boss, you heard the man. Remember your place and be happy with whatever trickles down to us second class citizens. Honest communication is obviously too much to ask, unless you represent more than two percent of the gaming public.

Well done, Sir (or Madam) Handle. Now you can move on and tell the next guy what they are allowed to do on their own damn site.

If GOL is the "face" of the 2%, then I will continue to point out developers who do shady things. And I will continue to be happy doing so. I get annoyed by it as a potential customer, and as someone who reports on things based on the word of these developers.

I feel like I'm repeating myself here. The Steam store and everywhere mentions Linux right up until the release. It releases and the Linux mentions are removed, and no communication until quizzed on it.

If you feel like me chasing down developers who bait and switch isn't worth your time, I really don't care.
