EVERSPACE is an incredibly beautiful looking 3D space shooter that takes elements from roguelikes that was funded on Kickstarter. They smashed their funding goal, and it's heading to Linux now too.

I'm already a little bit in love with it, the section of the trailer where you're piloting through what looks like a debris field looks amazing. Seeing an asteroid be shot to pieces looked pretty great too. Just wow.
Hopefully they won't come across too many issues with the Linux version. I hope they are planning for it early on!

Could someone help me understand this statement? It seems like an oxymoron to me.
Whatever else it might imply, I've always understood that the term rogue-like means perma-death will be involved.
When I see "perma-death," I think "gormless-tedium," and skip on to the next game description. But Everspace's claim to persistent progression gives me hope there might be more here than meets the eye.
So "Rogue-like gameplay with persistent progression." Any ideas?

It probably means it will still have permadeath, but you'll get to keep some of your items, skills, etc. Personally, that seems to take the fun out of space games. Think about how long it takes to get from one sector of a solar system to another. Then, bam! You die. Are you going to have to travel that distance all over again because you're not allowed to save? It just takes some of the freedom and exploration out of it when you're constantly starting over. But I reckon this is not that type of game anyway. It'll probably be a quick shoot-em-up kind of game that you play in small spurts rather than hours at a time.

Some clarification of how they understand "roguelike" in the context of the game:
I.e. it's their way to let players experiencing more environments in the game.
Read their KS campaign page for more details on gameplay mechanics in regards to story and progression.

We won't make EVERSPACE™ ultra hardcore and unforgiving. Rather, every time you die you will be able to improve your starting conditions for all the following runs. Permanently increase the capacity of your shields, install better engines, improve sensors, upgrade weapons, and attach armor plates - just to name a few.
Most ship upgrades will be directly visible, while some will have a huge visual impact, e.g. upgrading your wings will lead to an entirely different look.
You will be able to dig into the depths of the upgrade tree. Think of perks and upgrades that can change a lot of things - unlock new abilities and equipment, improve various stats and enable several other benefits that may change your play style.
Furthermore, every death will get you closer to revealing another fragment of the story being told. So dying is part of the progression.
Typically, due to the nature of the genre, rogue-likes don't have a deep story. We think the genre is just perfect to tell a captivating story in a fresh, non-linear way that unfolds differently every time you pick up the game. So we came up with an engaging plot that makes perfect sense for you to be re-born after every death and come back with a deeper knowledge of what is actually going on and, ultimately, solving the great puzzle. On this we have been working together with Falko Löffler who has been a successful story and game writer for adventure games for many years.

If this game brings the same fast-paced joy that Star Raiders on the 5200 Atari brought to me in the 80s, then it's a winner in my book. Far too many space game developers are pushing for realistic physics, complicated gameplay, and too much depth. Some of us just want to jump in, blow some stuff up, and leave in a 20 to 30 minute session. The Star Raiders of the 1980s gave you some depth, but not at the expense of fast paced action-packed gameplay.
LOL See, I'm one of those people who wants more depth. I'd like to be able to explore, mine, etc. in an open world rather than just dog-fighting, dying, rinse, repeat. I don't really need another Strike Suit Zero. But hey, I hope this game gives you what you want. It's always nice to have options.
I know what you mean: Star Citizen, Eve Online, Elite Dangerous. I'm happy that games are being developed for you guys (regardless of platform). I'm just begging for 1 comparable to Star Raiders gameplay. If anyone has a recommendation, please share with me!

I'm definitely excited for this! I love sci-fi and space-flight has always been an enticing premise for gaming, at least for me. Flying through space and smashing asteroids apart before engaging enemy ships? What's not to love!? Only being a port to Linux could be something of a hindrance, but I'll wait to pass judgment on a finished product, rather than criticizing something I've yet to experience. I may have to get a new GPU, however, as AMD GPU support in Linux is still- and will probably be for the foreseeable future -lacklustre. Shame.
