Kingdom Come: Deliverance, a game built with CryEngine looked like it was going to be a fantastic game to have on Linux, but the developers have told me it "is not possible technically".
When asked directly about what's happening with the game coming to Linux:
QuoteHello Liam,
Unfortunately I can´t verify this right now, as we don´t know. We still want to publish it on Linux too, but right now it is not possible technically. We are waiting and hoping for a solution for this. We can neither say if it will come for Linux, nor it will not come.
The situation about this topic is kind of tricky.
But thank you for your request.

Their Kickstarter still to this day lists Linux as a platform.
A real shame, as the game looks incredible. I hope they find a way, and I hope they make an official announcement about this instead of us chasing them down for details.

This is the answer they gave me about why it's not possible on Linux...
"Linux usually fights with driver support. Current CryEngine support for Linux is specifically tested on Ubuntu 14 64bit and is dependent only on SDL2 and NCurses.
Generaly, we have to use whatever Crytek implements into the CryEngine. DX12 is close to the metal as well and we have significantly better tools and support for it all major IHVs, MS tools we are using, many GPU debugging tools available etc.).
We are quite small developer, so we have to use whatever easies our development."
This sound suspicious tbh
Looks to me like a complete moronic answer, Crytec already has DX12 support in the engine I don't see how a small studio like them should be even concerned with messing with the dx12 implementation. Just mentioning that linux has driver issues is bullcrap sidetracking, only tested on ubuntu 14? which means will would work with 98% of distro out there. Real reason seems to be we don't want to bother with linux.

About Cry Engine. I've heard Chris Roberts mentioning, that current Linux support in it is quite poor and they basically will need to work on it to make it acceptable (and they'll be doing it implementing Vulkan backend). So probably Kingdom Come: Deliverance developers were bitten by this issue and realized they don't have resources like Star Citizen to pull it off. Yeah, too bad for backers I suppose. What they have to do however is to clearly explain what is going on, instead of giving some vague "for technical reasons". And to be fair - they should offer refunds really.
Once Start Citizen effort will break through, if Crytek aren't stupid they'll integrate Vulkan support in the engine as first class.

This sounds likely. I wonder if they are under some kind of contract that they can't just come out and say it's a problem with the engine. Although, the quote in the article sounds like they aren't sure if it can be fixed at all, while Lordpkappa's quote sounds more like the tools aren't efficient enough yet, and they are waiting for Crytek to make the engine easier to use.
Either way, I hope Crytek improves CryEngine performance and tools on Linux.

CryEngine are working on it I assume, but given Nvidia card/users can probably only use it, then I doubt they are dedicating too much to it. Plus Vulkan is still new so could be another 6months before they figure that out.

:'( was looking foreward to that one...
As much as these unfullfilled promises of kickstarter projects annoy me(and keep me from investing more often then not) I find it hard to judge a smaller developer that tries to do some really creative stuff harshly for dreaming to big.
Hope they find a way to still make this happen at least close to planned release and keep people updated about the situation. If they come to the conclusion they can under no circumstances do it: well, giving people back their money would be the right thing to do.

Game isn't released yet and they say they still want to support Linux. Maybe they will Larion us and get us a nice polished client 2 years after release, I wouldn't mind that. You guys freak out too easily. There is no easy path for a Linux client right now, but they will probably figure out one eventually

I hesitate to abandon Linux and go finally to Windows...
Kcd cancelled, Homefront delayed and after cancelled, and no informations concerning Umbra...

What? Was that a serious comment? People right here on GOL pledged money for the Linux version, people have a damn right to be annoyed.

I usually defend developers for belated/dropped Linux support, but the fact they chose an engine that doesn't support Linux from the get go - d*ck move.

The details they gave seem very odd. They got like 100.000 just to implement Linux support if I remember correctly and they are now threatening to fail to deliver without any form of recompense. This is a pretty scary trend, considering Carmageddon is doing the same and Star Citizen is well on its way to do something similar.
If this shit keeps up, I recommend setting up a kickstarter shitlist, where we maintain a list of developers we should not back for the fact that they will not deliver on their promise. Greedy and distrustful as I always am, I haven't backed any of the kickstarters, I did buy Descent Underground already though :p

Well, as a backer I have a) emailed Warhorse Studios, b) tweeted them, and c) commented on the Kickstarter page, all requesting clarification/an official update regarding their Linux support (politely, of course). I recommend everyone else (or, at least, those who backed this game) do so as well.
I feel that yes, we should be annoyed by this. Promising Linux support (thus enlarging your supporter base) then not delivering it is wrong. If they were always going to aim for PC release and Linux/Mac were only possibilities then they should have been clear about this in the Kickstarter campaign (just as they were about consoles). If they are having unforseen issues with development tools/drivers/(insert excuse here) then they should communicate this with their backers, and explain exactly why Linux support is now delayed/cancelled/indeterminate.

The only reason I backed this game was because they said a linux port was happening. Now I have a another game that I can't play. When the fuck are developers going to learn that if you want your game to be multi platform, don't use plugins and middle ware that only works on one or two OS's!!

I've been asking them in the past a few times about Linux, and it seems as if the plans crumbled over time.
First it was "yes, but not in beta".
Then it was "yes, but at a later time".
Now it's "technically impossible".
I see a pattern there. We'll see, maybe they still can manage to get it on Linux somehow at some day. I certainly hope so, since I backed the project.

I sent a message to the Community Manager yesterday and I received her answer:

The game is still planned and Warhorse Studio works to resolv the problem.
Guess it is all in the wording. "Technically impossible" at the moment can be read in a multiple ways. I'm guessing performance is a big factor there. I saw some beta footage of CultOfMush plating and the thing ran in the 20s on a 970. Witth he usual 35 to 50% performance hit that would mean a slide show on Linux :). We will see.

I backed them thinking of their Linux support, want to get rid of my Windows partition asap when I finish with few games, and now it seems that won't happen any time soon. Unprofessional is a way too nice word for what I'm thinking now to be honest.

This has me worried about Umbra (or Wolcen as it's now called). Also Kickstarter, also CryEngine, also no word on Linux since the campaign, and the Alpha is to go into Early Access on March 24.
Steam store page for Wolcen doesn't have Linux system requirements.
For backers looking for the 'announcement' there will be no Linux beta it's a comment on 26th Nov on this update.

Yeah, just received a similar response via email, emphasising that a Linux version is still under development. It just reinforces the importance of clearly communicating delays though - Linux gamers are generally happy to wait, we're just sick of developers promising then not delivering.
