The Discord client is available for Mac OSX, PC and Linux. Where's Windows?

Hm. I wouldn't recommend Telegram to privacy concerned. Its server isn't FOSS.

May be there should be some presence on diaspora*? https://diasporafoundation.org

Also, in addition to IRC it's good to have an XMPP chat room.

I didn't realize the irc room existed. God, I miss the old days. Lived in IRC from '98-'01.

IRC is quite actively used by a lot of FOSS projects. Which is kind of surprising, since I find XMPP to be better in many aspects.

I'm fairly new to Linux and still learning the ropes. Never used IRC. Can someone recommend a good client and why?

I've tried Empathy on Linux but not much else. Used mIRC in my old Windows days.

Pidgin is pretty good for IRC.

Thank you all for the suggestions. It's very diverse, everyone seems to be using something else. I will have a look.

Thunderbird has an IRC interface as well! As for standalone: XChat.

For an irc client, I recommend Weechat, though I haven't used it for a while. :/

It's wonderfully extensible, with perl, python2, ruby, tcl, and lua support.

My girlfriend and I recently found Telegram after having troubles on my end with the horribly outdated Linux Skype client; e.g. buggy, no instant image sharing, etc. I heartily recommend Telegram for those not put off by the lack of FOSS servers. It has all the features one can expect, sharing images, animated Gifs, videos and links within the app, an Android app, and most importantly: They keep it up to date across all OS's! ^^

I was quite surprised when I saw GOL now has a Telegram feed, but I'm not complaining :P

By the way, diaspora* has quite a lot of Linux users, because it's probably most feature rich FOSS social network, and decentralized one with that.

See http://the-federation.info

I've tried looking into diaspora, but to be honest I find the entire interface terrible. It's really not for me.
Shmerl 27 Mar 2016
Its interface changed quite a lot during the recent years. How long ago did you check it?

Just now, it's terrible.
Shmerl 27 Mar 2016
What exactly do you think is terrible about it? Also, what's the version that your pod is using?

Example of how it looks for me (opened #linux tag):

I'm sure it can be improved, and there are several efforts for it. But it's very usable.
