Are you ready to rob some banks? PAYDAY 2 is showing signs that it's getting closer to a Linux release.

From SteamDB, It looks like Linux is now going through "QA" which usually means quality assurance:

This could mean it will come tonight, tomorrow, in a week or later. It's a good healthy sign that the developers are working on it regularly.

It has suffered a bit of review-bombing over the introduction of micro-transactions in CS:GO style drops, and buying drills to open them with. They took on feedback and added in drills as a drop too (from what I read), but it hasn't helped the masses of negative reviews. It still has regularly over 10,000 players online, so I would say the game is still pretty healthy.

About the game
PAYDAY 2 is an action-packed, four-player co-op shooter that once again lets gamers don the masks of the original PAYDAY crew - Dallas, Hoxton, Wolf and Chains - as they descend on Washington DC for an epic crime spree.

The new CRIMENET network offers a huge range of dynamic contracts, and players are free to choose anything from small-time convenience store hits or kidnappings, to big league cyber-crime or emptying out major bank vaults for that epic PAYDAY. While in DC, why not participate in the local community, and run a few political errands?

Up to four friends co-operate on the hits, and as the crew progresses the jobs become bigger, better and more rewarding. Along with earning more money and becoming a legendary criminal comes a new character customization and crafting system that lets crews build and customize their own guns and gear. It's about time! It was announced over a year ago... And yet, it's still not actually out, so we could be waiting a lot longer yet.

Good to see another heavyweight title coming to Linux. The more, the merrier.

QuoteIt has suffered a bit of review-bombing over the introduction of micro-transactions in CS:GO style drops, and buying drills to open them with.

Given that earlier the developers vehemently promised that they would never implement microtransactions, I'd say the backlash is warranted.

Almir needs to be slapped with an oversized piece of toast. I wouldn't waste money on this.

This is the most important thing. Even in a period of player controversy, at least Payday 2 a name people recognize.

Nice to see that they actually intend to follow through on releasing it for Linux. I was worried that they had canceled it.
It's a great game to have on Linux and since it's an internal port we will probably be able to play with Windows-users as well.

As for the microtransactions with skins and safes; you can ignore them completely if you want to, even turn off visibility of skins in settings. They still support the game after 2½ years, money to pay for that has to come from somewhere and that somewhere is DLC and microtransactions, take it or leave it.

Did they use steganography to encode it in BMP pictures? :p

See my edit.

2.5GB for a soundtrack? Have they not heard of compression?
lucifertdark Mar 19, 2016
I know one thing, if I hadn't bought it really cheap in a bundle with the first game I wouldn't be thinking about buying it now, they're porting the wrong game, they should be porting the first one as that's the better game of the two.

Can't wait !!!!!

Hmm, they have released only 32-bit version for Windows and Linux version shows up as 64-bit, could it be mistake or is Linux version going to be 64-bit?

I'll not refuse to play a game simply because the developer or publisher "lied," changed their mind, or were simply the victims of capitalist Cerberus of time, resources, and a capricious marketplace. If I did, I wouldn't own Divinity: Original Sin, or Stanley Paradox, or so many other solid quality titles.

Having played Payday 2 since before any DLC, after 1,200+ hours I've seen and played it all. I boycotted the game briefly when the micro-transactions were first introduced and began playing again when the skin/mods were made available in-game, without purchase. The little bonuses the mods add are negligible and unnoticeable in general play, really.

Payday 2 is an action-soaked, wildly-replayable co-op shooter par excellence. It's often on sale for a very modest sum, and a real boon to the Linux community's game Library.
