The co-op shooter PAYDAY 2 is now officially available on SteamOS & Linux, yet another popular game! I’ve been waiting on this one as I am keen to play it to see what the fuss is all about. Being the bad guy can be more interesting than being forced to be the hero of everything most of the time.

It’s a shame it got review-bombed after they made some changes recently, but I can’t say if they are good or bad since it has only just arrived for us. We will have our thoughts and a port report up as soon as we can. We had no advanced warning, so it will take time.

It’s also on sale, so now is a great time to check it out! I picked up the GOTY edition myself, and will be checking it out.

About the game

PAYDAY 2 is an action-packed, four-player co-op shooter that once again lets gamers don the masks of the original PAYDAY crew - Dallas, Hoxton, Wolf and Chains - as they descend on Washington DC for an epic crime spree.

The new CRIMENET network offers a huge range of dynamic contracts, and players are free to choose anything from small-time convenience store hits or kidnappings, to big league cyber-crime or emptying out major bank vaults for that epic PAYDAY. While in DC, why not participate in the local community, and run a few political errands?

Up to four friends co-operate on the hits, and as the crew progresses the jobs become bigger, better and more rewarding. Along with earning more money and becoming a legendary criminal comes a new character customization and crafting system that lets crews build and customize their own guns and gear.

I really want to buy it on its sale but everything being digital and having 8-50kbps is just not worth downloading 1-15GB.

Genrally slow line or just having problems with Steam downloads?
There are possible workarounds for the later:

Just wondering if this game can be played cross-platform, since it seems to be a problem with some games. And what drivers are you using?

I'm happy that they followed through and released and that the port is pretty solid! It's a great game, especially playing with a group of friends on highest difficulty where you really has to work as a team.

runs great on my used pc (athlon II 240 + gtx 460 + 3gb ram)
also very cool that they put it for free to test for more than a week!!

Crossplatform works in terms you can play with windows mates.
Even your characters save works crossplatform, I could continue playing from point where I stopped with wine.

Setup: i5-3570k+670Ti with 361.28.

Seems to run really good. Also seems like Vsync is enabled even if its not marked from the options menu(locked 60 fps makes recording much simpler though so its a good thing in that case).
Depth of Field is terrible. Not really my type of game, but bought it anyway to support devs.

Why is peoples v-sync seem to be locked, mine ain't

Have to confess, I disabled the DoF . Never have liked that in games, Blur too if it's an option.

Whoever did the porting on this deserves a round of applause at the very least. It runs better in Linux for me than in Windows on the exact same hardware AND I'm using the newest Nvidia Vulkan enabled drivers.
leillo1975 Mar 22, 2016
@leillo1975
Set Vsync to 1

Always the same, If I put 0 or 1 I have the same result
How about enabling/forcing Sync to VBlank from your card's control panel?

I have checked "Sync to VBlank" and now It works. I have about 80fps. Thanks a lot dubigrasu. I don't have issues like this with other games. I never checked/unchecked this option.

it will turn me out total crime linux + heist !!! someone help me i cant stop playing thissssss :v

For vsync on nvidia card:
__GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK=0 %command%

I don't have any sound, does anyone else have this issue? Any fixes?
luis Mar 23, 2016
It is a good port, however there is no way of properly configure the SteamController... that is sad.
GBee Mar 23, 2016
I have pulseaudio installed, not by choice but out of necessity (bluetooth audio is a pain without it). However I get no audio in the video, menus or game itself.
GBee Mar 24, 2016
Managed to get audio working by forcing SDL to use Pulse - SDL_AUDIODRIVER=pulse %command%

Played about an hour, uninstalled ... waste of £4.59 - didn't realise the game was a wave shooter and it's nearly impossible to complete missions cleanly in single player. The AI is useless, they don't do anything - they won't break safes, loot, restart drills, cable tie hostages etc. So missions requiring you to carry three bags of loot requires making three long trips to the getaway vehicle, usually straight through a mass of police.

[meme]YOU DO NOT SIMPLY PLAY PAYDAY IN SINGLEPLAYER[/meme]

That sums's it about up. But depending on the mission it's definitely possible to do things cleanly.
