Project Zomboid is easily one of my favourite indie games to keep an eye on. Not just because I love Zombies, but the effort these guys put into the game is amazing.
The developers have been working on some fantastic and pretty big updates to the game I would like to highlight. The first of which is higher resolution graphics. Here's an example they showed from old to new:
They have also implemented a new C++ lighting system. It runs a lot faster and doesn't get interrupted when the map scrolls.
If you want to test the above changes, you can opt into their test branch by following the instructions here. The game really does look better.
Finally, you can see their new clothing and animation system in a preview video (the system isn't finished):
About the game
Project Zomboid is an open-ended zombie-infested sandbox. It asks one simple question – how will you die?
In the towns of Muldraugh and West Point, survivors must loot houses, build defences and do their utmost to delay their inevitable death day by day. No help is coming – their continued survival relies on their own cunning, luck and ability to evade a relentless horde.
It may not have a SteamOS/Linux icon, but it has supported Linux for a long time. It was one of the many games that had their SteamOS icon removed as it didn't launch correctly on SteamOS, but it works fine on desktop Linux.

I regularly play PZ with my friends. I can absolutely recommend the multiplayer, it really is a ton of fun. I think it is the only early access title that I actually play

It's a great little game, and I think a Graphics overhaul will do them a lot of good in drawing in New players.

I've been watching Project Zomboid for a few years now on Moddb.com http://www.moddb.com/games/project-zomboid
It has come a long way! Just in the video above I notice new features I haven't seen before. I love the simplicity and sim-like experience with... of course... zombies. Survival has never been better. Not to mention a cooperative mode so you can survive with your friends.
Don't forget these guys made Survival Crisis Z

These guys are masters as survival and zombies

I dunno does it make me incorrigible hipster trash if I say I like the old graphics better? The animations look very nice though. Really I was hoping they'd model backpacks; it always took me out of the immersion to see my character jogging along unhindered when I know she really has a 50 pound hiking bag on her back. The game is great, but I've never had a good time with multiplayer... seems to me multiplayer misses the point. Loneliness and isolation are a big part of the experience.
