I've somewhat followed the RPG Maker program over the years to see it evolve into a tool some decent games have been made from, and now it looks like RPG Maker MV will come to Linux.

Thanks once again to SteamDB:
QuoteChanged Depots
403874/config/oslist: linux
403874/name: RPG Maker MV Linux Depot

The Linux content depot is currently empty, so it's just begun. It doesn't meant it will release on Linux, as they could just be testing the waters here. Would be nice to have another useful tool native on Linux though.

I managed to find a Steam forum post asking about Linux support for games built in it, and it as usual had some idiots jumping in derailing it.

RPG Maker MV games are essentially wrapped up web-apps, so it shouldn't be too hard for the games to run, but I don't know what the editor is built with. It runs on Mac so it's at least possible it will come to Linux too since they know how to do more than one platform.

I will keep an eye on it. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

I remember using this like 15 years ago. Hasn't really changed a great deal since considering the timespan.

I've been looking forward to seeing RPG Maker come to Linux! I know a few guys that this could be the last straw to get them to try Linux.

I read your statement in the voice of Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons.

If you look at the credits for any major game, you will notice that "programmer" makes up a minority percentage of the total roles involved. Just saying. Tools like this help creative people create.

Games have always been comprised of more than programming. There is music, artwork, story, game-play design, Level design, and more that goes into creating a game. If you have no talent in those areas, your game will be terrible. The best way to make a game would be collaboration between programmers, writers, and artists, but for small projects tools like RPG Maker serve to bridge the gap for artists to create games. Nothing wrong with that IMO.

Probably one of the most short-sighted things I've ever read on GOL's comments.

...and it doesn't make games for Linux?

I would never use it myself, (Godot Engine fan checking in!) but I think this is fantastic!

Worst. RPG. Editor. Ever!

Well, if it comes out for Linux, I'm sure they'll add that part in.

...be kinda dumb if they didn't. :P

Great news! I've been really impressed with the RPG Maker games that Markiplier plays. Really cool games can be made with even the most simple and limited software (I don't actually know how limited this software is; probably not nearly as much so as people say).

But if I may rant a moment: "Want to make an RPG game??" "Want to make a 'Role Playing Game Game'???" Dammit people. It's not that hard! The G stands for "game!!"

I feel better now.

The editor uses QT already and version 1.1 just hit and they expressed interest on the official forums but no confirmation of course. Just keep in mind this is developed in Japan then translated. So there is a bit more of a delay than usual between updates.

Games are exported as html5 wrapped via node.js. the games already technically work on Linux and there is walk through on the official English forums.

I do agree Godot is a better choice for folks with even a bit of programming knowledge but remember there is an integrated database, event system, plugin system. You don't need any programming knowledge for rpgmaker, unlike godot. Godot being a more general tool has alot higher ceiling game wise and function wise.

Also one nice thing is because it's javascript using pixi.js you can modify the entire engine if you have the ability.

One downside. The performance on android is still subpar.

Also already seen a visual novel and side scrolled built using it. Not commercial yet, but given its javascript, it opens up more possibilities compared to previous rpgmaker.

Plus plugins! My favorite are http://www.yanfly.moe but there are alot listed on the official forums.

Linux is forging it's way into the industry very fast, and now is the time to go into the indie game development market. Unity has ported it's IDE into the Linux, so has Unreal Engine. Now we have RPG Maker (I hope). These seemingly small steps will definitely have huge impacts on users who were hesitating to try Linux.

noobs who use things like rpg-maker probably don't even know what open-source means so i'm suprised that even exists
