The brand new Linux-native RuneScape client "NXT" can now be downloaded to have it ready for the big release on the 18th. It does have issues though.

First thing, as noted on reddit, they tell you to download the repository keys for Ubuntu insecurely (they only officially offer an Ubuntu download).

They also depend on "libglew1.10", but newer distributions like Ubuntu 16.04 which is about to become the main LTS release don't have that older version in the repository.

Hopefully they will quickly sort these issues out. I am looking forward to seeing how the new client is, and finding out if RuneScape is actually any good.

I have tweeted and emailed the issues to them. I can't seem to post in their forum for some reason, so hopefully they pick up my messages. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

you can download the libglew 1.10 deb manually and install it. it doesn't remove 1.13 and has no conflicts that I can tell.
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/glew/1.10.0-3

there is a .deb download link someone left on the reddit post. which I used instead of using the unsecure repo.
http://content.runescape.com/downloads/ubuntu/pool/non-free/r/runescape-launcher/runescape-launcher_2.2.2_amd64.deb

this client is available in the AUR for Arch users.

I tried to log in, but when i try to type in the login or the password field I get no response from any sort of input from my keyboard.

Lolololol seriously?
Why most F2P games tend to screw the QoL instead of looking for creative ways of earning money?

Nonetheless, it amazes me how Jagex has managed to continously evolve Runescape to keep up with the times.

I started playing today (with the old client) using runescape-launcher, and I'm so far impressed. It's certainly feature rich and fun.

I am afraid not. Runescape -is- the closest thing to a mainstream MMO Linux has available, but this just shows how desperately Linux needs more MMOs. It's not anywhere near being a major title, even with the most generous of imaginations.

I wish I had a dollar for every time the tech industry has used some variant of the word "next".

On Manjaro(based on Arch) it works, directly from the AUR. No changes made.
Greetings.

I bet they will provide the missing library in the repository once 16.04 LTS is released.

It's disgusting. You can even buy yourself all the way to max level without playing the game at all. And a ton of people is doing that. Its just toxic and has nothing to do with enjoyment at all.(unless you enjoy spending tons of real money for stuff that makes you not have to do anything and make the gameplay feel more worthless). Even know you can't win runescape. The game indeed has one of the worst pay 2 win models you can find. It's so sad because it was really a great game before the solomon store and treasure hunter ruined the game..

If you really like the mechanics of the game and don't mind graphics i can't recommend Oldschool Rs enough. Its the last bit og remaining common sense we will probaly ever see from jagex.

There are already at least three major things named NXT: Lego Mindstorm, a cryptocurrency and a wrestling show. Do they even google the name they want to use prior to approving it?

What makes a game "a major title"? RS reaches 100k simultaneous players daily and probably many times that active players. At the moment Twitch says that there are 12k viewers watching Runescape streams, contrast that with 10k watching WoW. Yeah, I know that arguments that can be made that it's still not a major title.. However, I'd say it's much bigger than many people realize.

90% of those streams are Oldschool Runescape. Not Runescape 3 as this article is about.

I think the current top MMO titles by size of playerbase are

- WoW
- Guild Wars 2
- FF XIV
- Elder Scrolls Online
- Star Wars The Old Republic

A game not in that list is not a major title in my book, because these 5 games each represent a market share vastly greater than anything else has got (as in order of magnitudes greater). This is not saying that smaller games aren't successful. EvE Online is laughably smaller than any of these games but still successful. One of my personal favourites (Skyforge) is also not going to be a Top 5 title anytime soon, either. But I cannot name you -any- genre other than MMOs that does not have any of its landmark representatives ported to Linux.

I'll agree that they have pushed the TH too far, however I do not agree that it's "one of the worst pay 2 win models". You'll have to pay a lot... A LOT... to "buy yourself all the way to max level". At the same time it doesn't feel like the game is slowed down to force you to pay extra.
Saladien Apr 18, 2016
Is it released yet?
Its the 18 in Europe and i still cannot login.
STiAT Apr 18, 2016
The release will be done in the regular release schedule, so it will be done today morning to noon according to developers.

For major title or not, I'm personally very impressed on how many people seem to be actively playing the game. It isn't as advanced even technology and playstyle whise as WoW or others, but on the other hand, the game focuses in their own things, making it a lot deeper in certain aspects as crafting and skills, where you'll find a lot more to do than in regular AAA MMOs.

For me it points in the direction of old school MMORPGs as Ultima the way it's played and the things you do rather than the more action packed newer MMOs.

My hope goes for that with the NXT client the "allways-there-white-wall" will be gone. They featured this in the videos, so I really hope for it. View distance is horrible in the Java client, even on high settings.
