The survival game Rust from Facepunch Studios has been updated with a bit of a controversial change. They have added in new models, including female models, but you don't get to pick your gender.

QuoteWe understand this is a sore subject for a lot of people. We understand that you may now be a gender that you don’t identify with in real-life. We understand this causes you distress and makes you not want to play the game anymore. Technically nothing has changed, since half the population was already living with those feelings. The only difference is that whether you feel like this is now decided by your SteamID instead of your real life gender.

Your gender is linked to your SteamID, so what you're assigned to you're essentially stuck with. I'm fine with this, as I understand it's just a game. Others however, are not happy with this change.

I can understand both sides of the argument, people want their character to reflect them as an extension of themselves. I am a male in any game that lets me choose, simply because I also have that view of wanting it to represent me, but it's certainly not a deal-breaker.

Garry's twitter has been full of people complaining about it, and the Rust Steam forum has a few posts complaining about it as expected.

Honestly, I think give it a week or two and people will calm down about it. What a weird thing to get so up in arms over—it's a game. Do people who complain about this steer away from every game where they can't choose a gender? I don't think so.

Quoting: lucifertdarkSocial Justice Wombats getting their claws into the last place that's been largely free of their toxic influence, looks like gaming is about to get trashed for good like everything else those morons have touched.

I found more insults than arguments in your post. My fault.

It runs like poop on every platform. My brother gets 20-30 fps at max with a i7 4770k and gtx 460 on windows 7, all settings on low.
On linux i got up to around 35-40 fps with medium settings on a fx 6300 with gtx 650.
Unity engine is not meant for survival first person shooters that's for sure.

Dear gaming community, gender dysphoria doesn't quite work like that...

Quoting: stssIt just seems like a really strange feature.

The decision itself almost makes me think there's more behind the decision than just what makes for a fun game.
That combined with the quote:
QuoteTechnically nothing has changed, since half the population was already living with those feelings. The only difference is that whether you feel like this is now decided by your SteamID instead of your real life gender.
really makes it seem like the real reason behind it is to spread gender identity awareness or some crap.
Or... they're trying to make sure the sexes make up an even split.

Take your tinfoil hat off, for your own mental health.

A few commenters here complaining about SJWs, triggers, some odd kind of agenda... are painting transgender people with a broad brush.

Yet... those few commenters are the ones who are triggered and are spreading their prejudice. Calling the kettle black, much?

Do I have to be a representative here?

Okay, I'll bite.

I am not an SJW.

I do not toss around the word "privilege."

I don't care at all for the self-made villains that are Hillary Clinton and Anita Sarkeesian.

I will make any joke I damn please and burn any race or sex card played against me, because I have a concept of comedy.

My triggers are kept to myself and have nothing to do with my gender dysphoria. I've been going through EMDR for trauma stemming from my father beating my mother into the concrete while my six-year-old eyes witnessed it from start to finish. That's the source of my triggers and they have kept me from standing up for myself and others in many potentially physically violent scenarios.

I'm actually quite calm. I guess I'm happy to put up a mirror for those few people to look into.

Quoting: legluondunetIn a video game we should be able to choose the gender, race, type of creature , hair color ... we want.

Why? Many of the best videogames give you no choice about player character at all. Think about the Half Life, Bioshock or Tomb Raider franchises.

Tbh, unless there are -really- compelling reasons why a character has to be premade, I want to have a character editor for the games I am playing. Most of the time there are no good reasons as the storytelling is nowhere deep enough to warrant it. While Tomb Raider and The Witcher certainly make sense to be told using a premade character. Victor Vran could as well have been a Victoria. Honestly? The majority of games using premade characters were just too lazy to add opposite gender characters so they ship with a fixed one (usually male).

I can vaguely see how that'd make sense for a survival game. You're tossed into a situation with nothing (not even clothes, it seems?) and have to make the best of it. A mismatch would be mitigated to some extent by the knowledge that nobody else got to pick their sex either, and that they likewise know there was no element of self-expression in your non-choice. (That doesn't mean I wouldn't much rather create my own character...)

Well, thing is that according to their own postings they knew that their players would hate it. Why would any business in their right mind do something "unpopular"? This isn't politics, this is a computer game and people want to enjoy it. If they implement features I hate - you know, there are a lot of games on the market I can spend my money on, so from a business perspective it's a really dumb thing to do. With 2,000 games available, even Linux players can easily snub a game that comes with a "We don't care if you hate it!" feature.

And really, so far I haven't heard a reason to implement such a feature that I wouldn't immediately dismiss as completely and utterly stupid. But it seem the devs still think it's the best idea since sliced bread. Amazing how blind people can be.

How can you possibly know that any significant number of players actually hates this feature enough to stop playing? Are there any statistics available? There are loud people on the intertubes making noise about it, but does that mean it's seriously hurting their business? I guess it's possible.

On the other hand, it isn't hard to imagine this stunt (because a stunt it clearly is) might even bring them enough publicity to result in a net win.
