I don't understand why some people think this game is in any way controversial. Sure it is daring (it wouldn't be the first time terrorists attack content creators), but ISIL is the most hated terrorist group right now. I think it's just that people go "Oh, same creators as Hatred, it must be wrong is some kind of way!"

It's a tame game, but it's fun. It just needs more maps; I've finished the game in 5h (and that includes replaying some of the older maps to try and beat my score). I could get some more fun out of it trying to get the remaining achievements.

IIRC they're going to release the modding tools in a week

Destructive Creations seem to have realized that taking advantage of bigots is a good moneymaker. As with Hatred, they're perfecting the art of lightening the wallets of people who mainly buy it because they think they're upsetting someone. Pretty cynical, as marketing strategies go, but you can't deny the effectiveness.

Find something controversial, dash off a quick game and market it to the angry folks. Add a bit of spin, in this case anti-refugee sentiment, to the marketing and watch the rubes line up to throw money at you.

The creator has explicitly said it's got to do with Muslim immigration into Europe and nationalism. Hard to say how much of that is marketing (probably a fair amount) and how much he actually believes in it, but that's how they're selling it in any case. You can certainly see a lot of that sentiment in the Steam reviews.

Except, unlike Hatred, this game is actually pretty fun and, IHMO, worth the money.

Hey guys... dont take it so seriously... it's only a game. Only have fun shooting (put the name you want) terrorists... that's all... :D

And when the modding tools are out.. you can change the objectives to whatever group of hated terrorist of your taste you wish... that's all... :D

I don't think it's particularly controversial, I mean some of my favourite games involve going on crusades and enacting genocide on indigenous populations. It's more just a deathwish kind of thing.

I can just see this making Fox News or some third-rate UK tabloid and them blowing it out of proportion with it making global news, then some violent religious extremists seeing it and wanting to do to the devs what they did to French magazine creators and Danish cartoonists.

Obviously not a guarantee, but there's a chance, and if you're going to put your life at risk like that then at least make sure it's for a good reason like journalism or making people think, not making a game where you shoot bad guys.
