Another month, and another Steam Hardware Survey.
First of all, here's the overall market share:
Linux overall for March
0.85% - 0.06%
Ubuntu 15.10 64 bit 0.19% 0.00%
Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS 64 bit 0.17% +0.17%
Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa 64 bit 0.09% 0.00%
Linux 64 bit 0.08% - 0.01%
Onto my usual point: At face value you might assume Linux use is just dropping. It's likely that growth in general has just outpaced Linux growth. So don't be too sad about it.
As for Distribution popularity, Ubuntu still remains top dog.
Linux by itself
Ubuntu 15.10 64 bit 20.20% +0.83%
Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS 64 bit 17.78% +17.78%
Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa 64 bit 9.84% +0.12%
Linux 64 bit 8.74% -0.46%
Other 43.44% -1.13%
You know me by now. I don't think these statistics are really to be trusted. One of the main problems is that we have no idea how they are sampling the data, and we don't know how we are supposed to read it.
SteamOS and Steam Big Picture do not get the survey yet either. That's a chunk of people we already know that aren't even counted.
So basically, business as usual, we are doing fine.

Some you may have missed, popular articles from the last month:
Quoting: BeamboomQuoting: GuestQuoting: seveni don't know anyone who uses steamOs, i honestly think not alot of people use it
Most everyone who buys a Steam Machine?
How many do you know who's done that?
... Exactly.
I haven't bought one, but I have built one, and it is indeed running SteamOS..

well ok it says Linux gaming droped % bla bla. ok. so Last's month %3 = this month's %3
but even tho this situation maybe very false cause of if this month Linux user base is growth +%3 then LM's %3 wont be equal TM's %3
so i just wanna know how is overall linux userbase is growth since last 6 months. That is the fact we should think about it.

Has anyone actually ever had a survey on Linux? I have 3 Linux machines that regularly run Steam games and have the steam client loaded at startup and I've not once had a survey.

I'd be interested to know how they identify GNU/Linux, and which distros. There is a possibility that computers are misidentifying themselves for various reasons. Back in the day, browser use statistics were skewed by both Opera and Mozilla-based browsers falsely identifying themselves as Internet Explorer, because a lot of sites wouldn't work properly with them if they didn't do that. I wonder if there are similar things going on with this Steam survey, and it would be good to get some details about their exact data collection methods.
Ultimately though, either Valve needs to understand that their trusted relationship with game companies is their core business value not their client source code, and free the code, or the GNU/Linux user community needs to build a free code alternative to Steam, SteamOS, and Steam Machines. I look forward to the Dragonbox Pyra being released and seeing some comparison reviews.

Quoting: strypeyI'd be interested to know how they identify GNU/Linux, and which distros.Open a Shell and run the command: cat /etc/os-release
Then you get information like this for Ubuntu14.04.4 LTS:
crazy@zbox02 ~ $ cat /etc/os-release
NAME="Ubuntu"
VERSION="14.04.4 LTS, Trusty Tahr"
ID=ubuntu
ID_LIKE=debian
PRETTY_NAME="Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS"
VERSION_ID="14.04"
HOME_URL="http://www.ubuntu.com/"
SUPPORT_URL="http://help.ubuntu.com/"
BUG_REPORT_URL="http://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/"
crazy@zbox02 ~ $
or this for openSUSE 12.3:
crazy@zbox03:~> cat /etc/os-release
NAME=openSUSE
VERSION="12.3 (Dartmouth)"
VERSION_ID="12.3"
PRETTY_NAME="openSUSE 12.3 (Dartmouth) (x86_64)"
ID=opensuse
ANSI_COLOR="0;32"
CPE_NAME="cpe:/o:opensuse:opensuse:12.3"

Quoting: strypeyThere is a possibility that computers are misidentifying themselves for various reasons.No, there is not! The survey is done by the Steam-Client and runs directly on the OS. You will have to use Wine if you want your Linux count as Windows :). Also you can verify the data before submitting it to Valve.
Quoting: strypeyor the GNU/Linux user community needs to build a free code alternative to Steam, SteamOS, and Steam Machines.Hmmm... all of them exists in some way already :)

I have the steam client in my machine for over a yerar, and I never has a survey. But I believe than these datas from Steam is close of reality. We need still play in Linux to go up the Linux percent.

Quoting: Crazy PenguinI think Wine needs to add the Word "Wine" to the OS-String, e.g. "Windows Wine XP" or "Windows XP Wine". Something like that. Problem solved! :PQuoting: whitewolfguyWine counts as Windows. Which version depends on how you have configured Wine. You can see as which Window version it counts in the survey data which Steam shows you before you send the survey.Quoting: Comandante oardoA lot of people is using Steam on Linux via WINe, How the statistics of the Steam Hardware Survey recognize those accounts?.. As Windows XP users? As Others?Good question, I also have this doubt.
