Feral Interactive are teasing our minds with a new clue for a Linux & Mac port to come. It's time to get your thinking caps on.

Here's their new clue in the Very Soon section:
image
"808 SB12S" is the clue.

As usual, I will leave it up to you lot who are way better than I am at decrypting Feral's teasers.

Feral sure do have quite a few games coming out this year for us, exciting. I just hope they continue to work on previous ports like XCOM 2 and Tomb Raider which aren't quite up to scratch. We are already behind on the recent XCOM 2 patch and DLC, so it's time for them to up their game. Article taken from GamingOnLinux.com.

Could be some construction equipment, http://heavycherry.com/machineinfo/kramer/-808_series_3-1999-construction_machine-mobile_digger.html and http://www.equipmentspecialistsinc.com/ecom-prodshow/SB12S.html

So ... construction work in Mars ... wasn't Quaid a construction worker?

Could it ... could it be a remake of this? Like the new HD versions of the Giana Sisters and such?

Have ever gotten a clue by feral? Even after a game is announced, I never know what the "hint" is supposed to be.

Watch it be Just Dance.

never understood one of Feral's clues, not one...

About 808 and music, the TS-808 is a well known guitar pedal effect from Japanese guitar makers Ibanez, it is a type of distortion/overdrive. It is well know for being a key part of Stevie Ray Vaughan's signature sound. Today, the 808 number and it's green color still refer to that particular sound.

Also, the SB12 is an Ampeg bass amp from the late sixties, also known as Ampeg Portaflex.

So we know it's probably not Doom because of the Mac requirement... I don't know what it can be.

Those of you discounting Doom due to lack of OpenGL 4.5 or Vulkan are forgetting Metal

I imagine the technical challenge for porting Doom would be the fact that OS X doesnt support OpenGL 4.5 or Vulkan, so they would have to do a port over to Metal. Since a Linux port is trivial perhaps Feral would simply take on the supporting of the platform. The previous id Linux ports were never really supported, they were just dumped on the id ftp server and said "have at it".
Aspyr did the port of Rage to OS X, that would have been trivial too. Is also a precedent for id games going through a porting house

So we have reference to a song by MC Hammer = Warhammer.
Mars = The red planet = Warhammer 40k

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II confirmed.
You might be right considering Feral appears in the Dawn of War II SteamDB history

*BEATING A DEAD HORSE TO EVEN MORE DEATH THAN POSSIBLE!*

OMG! Please let it be Doom!

While I have already purchased it I have not put hardly any time into it due to not having free time for gaming right now. I currently have absolutely no plans to buy the season pass due to it looking like MP only content which I have no interest in I would certainly purchase the season pass from the Feral store just because. Plus I WILL buy a gift or two to give away here if it happens.

The only thing I'm a little sad about is that multi-gpu/SLI still isn't a thing with Vulkan so I would be very surprised to find out that it is the first Vulkan v1.1(v2?) game and that it supports multi-gpu in Linux (or winblows for that matter).. If that's the case I WILL soil myself. :D

First, porting from one low level API to another low level API may range from difficult to suicidal, and then, it may ultimately bring some overhead whereas the goal of both these APIs is to reduce this overhead to the minimum... nonsense if you ask me.

If it's Doom it's gonna be the most amazing thing, both because it's an awesome game and because it means that Bethesda is planning to start supporting Linux, and most of their games are awesome! But I doubt this is the case... unfortunately :(

I forgot the Mac part in this. Can't be Doom then. :-(

Oh well. Gta5 perhaps! (j/k)

If against all odds it's DOOM, I will cry like a baby.
dmantione May 25, 2016
There are multiple ways to solve the Mac problem:
- Modify the engine to work with a lower OpenGL version
- Use a Vulkan to Metal translation layer
- Write a Metal renderer

So I don't see Mac support ruling out Doom in any way, just slightly decreasing the chance, but on the other hand the Earth-808 / Victor von Doom reference sounds very convincing to me, IMO it is the strongest explanation of the 808 I have read here.

Doom.

because of the soundtrack.

I hope it's something more interesting than Doom. Mad Max would be fun.

And now to my happy place, Off Topic:

No, actually what you said is (partly) nonsense. Porting from an API to another is only difficult if these API's are very different. This isn't the case with Vulkan and DX12. Being low level hasn't got much to do with it. In fact, porting between them seems to be trivial compared to OpenGL and DX11 due to their very similar design. Parts of the port can almost be done with search-and-replace, especially if and when a usable HLSL to SPIR-V compiler finally surfaces. And porting itself does not imply overhead if the graphics engine is well designed and sensibly abstracted, although any backend implemented as an afterthought by a third party is rarely well optimized and polished.

I don't know the specifics about Metal, but it seems to do things a bit differently and porting might be quite a bit more work. More high level abstractions in some areas than the "competing" API's apparently. I don't see any reason to believe a port would be more difficult than let's say porting from DX11 to OpenGL though. In principle that is. I don't imagine there are that many graphics programmers very fluent in Metal at this point which naturally adds a hurdle to the process.

OK, thanks for clarifying, I wasn't aware of these facts.

never got a clue about Feral's hints anyway :)

Well, if you look further at the 808, we can find the following :

The band NERO has an album "Welcome Reality". On this album, the first song on the track list is 2808. Notice the "808", the second track is Doomsday. Notice the "Doom" in doomsday. (To be honest, I'm sure they got this from the anime "Cyber City Oedo 808" which take place in the year 2808 in Tokyo, not mars unfortunately)

Doom confirmed.

Also, '808' could be read as 1337 for 'Bob', which used to be the name of John Romero's dog back in the day. Serious.

Just for interest sake, I dont know if it has been mentioned already, but if you do a google search on that image and you follow the trail you eventually end up at an article posted by Forbes about water on Mars

http://www.forbes.com/sites/jvchamary/2015/09/30/life-mars-water

it has to be doom !
