Linux & Steam running on the PS4 playing Bastion is impressive

Woah! :O

Oh man. If I could dual boot SteamOS or Linux on a PS4 that would make it worth getting one!

A friend of mine called me that he had a logitech PS3 Wheel to give me for Free because he had no use for it.

Well I dont know the real reason why he didnt want to use it anymore , maybe he replaced his ps3 with ps4 and was not working? maybe it was not working in Windows ? or maybe he broke his ps3? :D

Well with my friend we have a small friendly fight Windows Vs Linux every time we meet...
Anyway I invited him to come to my house so we can test the Wheel...

At the start he was teasing me if there are any racing games available for Linux...
I told him that many racing games are available but we can play GRID Autosport since is one of the best racing games available in Linux...

Anyway I pluged in the Wheel ...and launched the game
(He got confused and said , ehh ... arent you going to install any drivers ??? how the heck is going to work???)


With a great surprise everything was working perfectly in the game , even the wheel was vibrating,shaking, etc and without any configuration...

You had to see his face...

I was surprised as well but now I have a racing wheel which I have to learn with it how to drive because is a bit hard atm ...

Well, the ps4 is basically a PC (and don't forget that ps4's operating system, "Orbis OS", is a modified BSD) so running any modern pc operating system shouldn't be a problem. (I believe, the trickiest part should be installing and getting the boot loader to actually work)

Fun that they got it to work, but I'd rather use my PS4 as a PS4 and my computer as the home for Linux. It's the same reason I'd never install Linux on a Mac. It works better than expected, but the software is the only reason to pay such a high price for the hardware, and if you replace the software, you've just bought an overpriced PC.

Even with the Mac software, you've still bought an overpriced PC.

Also, it looked like they booted into Linux from within the PS4 interface, meaning both OSes were still installed.

Not all Macs are overpriced for what you get in terms of hardware. I believe even Linus Torvalds uses Fedora on a MacBook Air.

Though for the price, the PS4 makes a pretty impressive little PC. What are NUCs priced at? And at any rate, do they come with discrete graphics?

I understand where you're coming from and why you say that, sure it employs x86 and whatnot, but unless something follows the IBM compatible open PC architecture, it is *not* basically a PC.

✓ SSH connect to other Linux PCs on the LAN for SCP, Rsync, to issue installing updates, power on or off the machine remotely, etc..

✓ Get a New Motherboard, CPU, RAM -- looks like you're going to need to reinstall the Operating System! On Windows you get a BSOD, on Linux the OS boots up switching from LGA 1366 i7 940 to LGA 1151 i7 6700k. No hickups.

Exactly why Valve, GOL, and us Linux gamers need to talk about the ability of Steam Machines to use any controller! Nobody is talking about it, and it's the only console that can do it! It's been a subtle footnote in a few GOL articles, but they are always written like we already know about it! Maybe we know, but most people don't!

Anyway, thank you for the great comment Wolfyrion! I would have liked it to be a GOL article and not just a comment. I'm not actually sure if you're using SteamOS, but my point is still related even if you're not.

Now we can play Bastion at 15FPS..haha!

As I commented before - I'm not that impressed by the fact of Steam client running there, because fail0verflow already did all the heavy lifting and even enabled 3D acceleration (not sure though if they already switched to amdgpu or still use radeon). So basically any Linux application would possibly work.

But what so far is missing are benchmarks of demanding games. Bastion isn't the best example. Something like Witcher 2 or Shadow Warrior running on PS4 on Linux with acceptable performance would be really impressive.

Don't worry guys - you can trust Sony will remove the possibility of running linux on PS4 through one of the upcoming system updates. Why give users the freedom to use purchased equipment the way they see fit?

I wonder why Sony initially had official support for Linux on the PS2 (link, as well as the PS3 (link, only to remove it wholly afterwards. It's not like they had Steam to worry about back then.

Upcoming? Sony patched this vulnerability a long time ago. This is using old, old software.

There should be various reasons. PS3 was released a year later than Xbox 360, therefore struggled a lot to gain market share. Support for "other" OS was a part of policy to advert the device accessible. After gaining the market advantage, Sony returned to their usual policy of screwing anything else which is not Sony. Sounds like Apple, is it not? ;-)

It would be super beneficial if it would be possible to run fully operational Linux on PS4. However, it seems to be against Sony business. Right now in gaming business Linux starts to mean Valve. And I guess it's obvious Sony and Valve are competitors.

I have PS4 and if I would be able to run Linux games on the same hardware it would be golden. But I have soft v3.50, that's one problem. Also, according to what I read some time ago, Wifi support does not work yet. And current support for AMD is not great in Linux games.

So for me it's great someone tries to bring Linux ro PS4, but I'm not taking any benefits from it yet, and I'm afraid I never will. Bit I would really love to.

I got a scanner from a colleague who had his Windows updated, and the scanner drivers didn't work any more. Plugged it into Linux and it worked, of course without installing drivers or whatever.
