Minetest is an open source game and game engine much like Minecraft and available for free. It has recently released a major new version.
It adds quite a like like new textures, new sounds, new graphical features, new modding options and the usual assortment of bug fixes.
I tested out the new version and I have to say it has really impressed me. The base game does feel a bit too bare though. I am not the only one who feels that way, as it seems Voxelands was forked from it when Minetest went down the route of being more of an engine than an actual game. Still, it's cool to see it progress and there are a few mods available to make it feel like more of a game.
You can see the full changelog here.
Thanks to AnxiousInfusion for letting me know.
Some you may have missed, popular articles from the last month:
Oh - and a single minetest server can be accessed from Linux, Windows, MacOSX clients and Android devices, which removes my main complaint against Minecraft - tablets and phones can only play against Pocket Minecraft.

Worth looking at Terasology too, although I haven't tried it myself.

AFAIK the PE is becoming more and more similar to the desktop version, and the plan is to eventually merge them. It will take quite some time till we get there, though. It would be nice to play together with PE users, even tho I personally never tried playing the PE for more than a few minutes, because FPS games are IMO terrible on mobile devices. Actually most kinds of games are pretty bad and uncomfortable to play on mobile (except board/puzzle/card games), but that's probably just me.

There are some really fun mods and subgames for Minetest that are worth trying out. I'm very new at it, but I've found everything easy to install and highly accessible.
So far my favourite subgames are Voxelgarden, which has Viking-esque tech, and Pixture, which really does cool things with the textures. Although being such a n00b, I'm a bit lost and just doing things at random in single-player mode, and yet not confident enough to hop onto a server full of experienced players.

You're going to have to start by porting Irrlicht to Vulkan.

Well I tried some mods, I do hope they add in a mod downloader into it as that would certainly simplify it.
Shame though, the subgames I tried didn't work due to missing lua.init or something.
