I actually really liked where XCOM went with X-COM: Apocalypse, it had issues sure, but it had some interesting features. Like OpenXcom, OpenApoc will be a fully featured open source engine. The new video showing their progress is fantastic.
It's open source too of course and available on github.
Looking forward to seeing it continue to progress!
About the game (From Steam)
There's something evil in the city tonight...
Earth has been ravaged by human excess, petty conflict and alien invasion. The world's population has been herded into huge cities, the first of which was Mega Primus.
2084: A Utopia shattered, social collapse and civil unrest reigns in Mega Primus. Fiendish aliens terrorize the city. UFOs swarm through Dimensional Gateways. The city's under siege from an unknown enemy.
Your mission, as X-COM Commander, is to combat alien aggression and uncover their deadly intentions. But Beware! Alien infiltration into the city and its politics could see you under fire from criminal gangs, religious sects, and even the police!
Alien fleets fill the skies, creatures terrorize the city, chaos reigns... Welcome to the war, welcome to the Apocalypse.

Its a shame the game never got completed to its full extent, it was quite a novel idea back in the day having a whole city to protect and every building being a possible mission point, then the Alien city as the enemy.
I wasn't overly keen on the real-time combat as it became difficult to manage at times, I think it would have been better to have real-time UNTIL you encountered enemy then it went to turn based for easier management.

I thought the real time combat was a toggle, yoy could switch to turn based? My memory is fuzzy on this one though.
Like OpenXcom i am sure this engine will overcome issues the original had :)

Yeah, you could play the mission turn based like the former games. I didn't play the game at the time of release and then I couldn't get into it because I found it very different from the others and I had no time to learn it. Maybe I'll try again when this engine is more mature.

Thanks for your interest - this video was actually recorded on Linux, and is my primary dev platform.
The progress is rather slow, mainly due to manpower, so if you are / know any devs willing to help out please let us know!
Or just drop by the forum at openapoc.pmprog.co.uk, or IRC (freenode #openapoc) and say Hi :)
