Nice. I'll try to participate. Currently Mesa and amgdpu seem to be not ready for RX 480 support in Debian testing. I wonder if they'll get in shape soon. Building mesa from source or figuring out how to make dkms module for amdgpu might be fun, but it's not something I particularly want to spend time on and would prefer a ready solution for it.

Catalyst is dead. The future is amdgpu + radeonsi.

I'm also waiting for Fedora to be ready before buying my RX 480. But since Linux 4.7 is needed and it's not yet released, and also that Fedora keeps a buffer of 1 kernel version, I'd say that the 4.7 kernel will be available on Fedora around mid-October/November (2016).

That's a long waiting time :(

And that's just for Fedora, which is pretty quick to adopt new kernel releases. I don't think Debian is as quick to adopt new kernel releases.

Would be nice if AMD could take that delay into consideration for their next cards, so that we don't have to wait six months between the possibility to buy the card and the possibility to use it (simply).

@Creak: As I said above, solution for delayed kernels is using dkms module. Linux supports it for a long time already. The problem is - if there is no ready dkms package for amdgpu, creating one yourself is a tedious task. AMD are using something like that in their ADMDGPU-PRO package for closed OpenGL, but I'd prefer a standalone dkms package that can be combined with messa package and the rest of the open stack.

Any RX 480 owner on Arch can simply install MESA GIT from their CLI like so:
yaourt -S mesa-git lib32-mesa-git

I would be surprised if 7 days elapsed and Arch users didn't create a cusom AUR PKGBUILD specifically including the AMD Patches.

Arch Users are notorious for having the newest shit the quickest out of anyone.

Alls a person will have to do is run the modified kernel for about a month until the patches enter mainline and are common.

Ive used mesa-git, as well as mesa-vulkan-intel-git and I can't remember any problems running from GIT.

AMD may be creating the solution of "not breaking X11" that Ubuntu tried to create by having "Mir Display Server" directly inhouse.

I hope Phoronix test results are as exciting as they're hyping up.

Don't count on that. Europeans are also going to have to pay more (especially for the 8GB version) which will hopefully not diminish the price/performance ratio too much.

Only 1-2 day(s) left and we will finally get all the answers to our questions... regarding the RX 480 at least ;)
