I need a new wallpaper, and I would very much like one that in some way has GamingOnLinux branding on it. Here's your chance to shine and win something.
Rules
1) Enter as many as you like
2) It must somehow have "GamingOnLinux.com" or "GamingOnLinux" on it and be easily readable
3) Ideally have it in a format that's easy to edit
4) No art taken directly from games (that includes screenshots, logos etc, it's a legal grey area)
5) You don't have to use our penguin logo!
Accepted licenses
All the wallpapers submitted will need to be under Creative Commons BY-4.0 or CC0
Since I will be using it for personal and GOL related uses, I need to be able to use it without restrictions, so those licenses seem fair to allow the same to others.
Where to host it
You can use any image upload website like imgur to upload it and link it in the comments.
Resolution and source files
Resolutions: At least 1920x1080, one that scales okay to higher and lower would be awesome.
Please keep the source file, I may need higher resolutions in future and may want to make adjustments. If the chosen winner does not have the source file, a new winner will be chosen.
What can I win?
Your choice, I can either donate £20 to a FOSS/Linux related project/website of your choice or you can be gifted games worth £20 from any store that accepts gifting games.
Don't feel bad if you want the games, not everyone can afford what they want it's totally cool either way!
When does it end
Sunday July 3rd 9PM UTC.
Winner chosen by me alone.
Go get creative!
I am hoping to do more fun little competitions like this as time goes on, stay tuned.

+ Click to view long quoteI thought so as well. By seeing the other wallpapers with small games screenshots, I wasn't sure if you accepted "fair use" or not ;)Here's my entry - I edited my post on page 1 to include it aswell - it's 4k so it should scale to 1080p and 1440p well. While I think it is very cool, I wouldn't realistically be able to use it due to the inclusion of art from games. It's a big grey area when it comes to such things. Very cool design though and I'm sure others would love to use it!

Same goes for ~2 others I saw earlier, I can't use art directly from games (unless they have a clear license to expressly allow it somewhere).
But I admit this wallpaper is gorgeous :D
Thank you for your compliment, I just wanted to make something and put it out there that would improve Linux Gaming's persona.
It's my understanding that after a work is modified beyond a certain point it becomes a derivative work, thus each included image is not in its original form and subjugated to the same limitations for use similar to how anyone can take I think up to 15 second sound clip from a song and include it in their derivative work with no obligation (thus the entire techno genre).
I even considered doing a color mask over all the letters to make it more monochromatic however I love the personality of the color, and the emotionally charged statement to the world "Hey guys, Linux has AAA games!" that's the message I wanted to make.

If you still feel that way I'm sure I could do a rendition entirely from fan art, I'm not sure if it would strike the same emotional cord, in either case my main purpose was accomplished by creating something cool and sharing it with my friends :)
Say - give me the name of 6 different games (I would recommend a Variety of Genres and some AAA) and I'll try on some art under the CC to see if it's hot or not.

I went through the horrible ordeal of dealing with the HTML email GOL has sent me to post this masterpiece:

You should get the official list of games on Linux and create a wallpaper including the name of all 2,500 and then do a overlay of a yellow penguin face on the ASCII so alls you see is Tux with game names in his form.

Oh and for others out there I found GOL uses the Ubuntu Font.
Also the colors:
Light Blue #001E2C
Dark Blue #006EA1
Grey #222222
You can get more colors using GColor3

You're right, there are some fair use laws about art (I think it's even around 30 seconds of music, but I have no idea for images and video games). But as Liam said, this is a gray area and I guess, since he's not a lawyer, he simply doesn't want to go there ;)
I think the same goes with fan art (although their authors probably won't sue you if you use their work ;)), but if the fan art is under a free license, like CC-BY, I guess it's cool. Since CC-BY requires you to precise the author, you might have to add it at least in the meta data of the image.
About the games I'd like to see on a wallpaper, my main games are Dota2, Cities: Skylines, Broforce and Civilization. But I agree that fan art might not have the same impact as real screenshots... (you can still make your own wallpapers and post them on your own thread in the forum ;))

I will add an announcement to it above the news.

The wallpaper I made is more basic than many of the others here, because I am not a very great designer, but I felt it might at least be worth posting. This was made in Pinta, which is like Paint.NET for Linux with some extra limitations. In the very background there is blurred out Steam listings, all of which are for Linux/SteamOS. The line that appears to be a graph represents the amount of Linux Steam users, taken from this article. The top right is styled like the Linux Mint terminal, since that is what I happen to be using at the moment.
Honestly, I don't think my wallpaper turned out very good, especially compared to some of the wallpapers in some of the other posts, which are actually pretty good. I don't want to waste my work, so I will post what I have made and may try to improve and make a better wallpaper from scratch. I feel this wallpaper is a bit creative, but just doesn't look nice enough when everything was put together.

Your wallpapers are cool SangreDeReptil but it’s a bit strange that the gamepad is so blurry. The gamepad texture is blurred on purpose, because if it's very clear, the cable wouldn't be visible and the general image would be confusing (I wanted to make it that way in the beginning, and it didn't work). Though, the texture is in a separate layer, so, if necessary, can be easily changed. Thanks for your feedback!

All used assets (the penguin and the hearts) were taken from free photo sites.Just keep in mind that the free photo sites might have licenses that are incompatible with Creative Commons BY-4.0 and/or CC0, thus preventing their use in this competition. But that should be easy to check if you remember where you got them.

You should make a new article, announcing who the winner was. This single message, as a conclusion, felt a bit abrupt. :)
